How lazy do you have to be to need this, or how bad of a driver?

awesome. this is the same thing that Lexus is doing on their 2007 LS460. ive been wanting to see some video of how it works.

i wouldnt say lazy or crappy driver need this(well they do but i could use it as well). i just think its about precision, and nobody likes to parallel park. i wish my car could do that

not a bad idea at all, although, no one REALLY needs it

Yeah but can you imagine how much extra $$$ that feature would tack on! I will park the car myself.

Typical German over-engineering and one more costly and unnecessary feature to constantly fix. This is why ever since the 90's, German cars has a had huge decline in reliabilty---- not like they were high to begin with.

Just wait, with GPS systems and what not advancing more and more. Auto drive features will be coming soon. Next thing you know, you'll have satellite monitoring speed limiters and GPS controlled cars that ONLY go the speed limit! AHHHHH! *jumps out window*
Re: BMW's Park themself

are you kidding me. so pretty much we wont even need dirvers licenses anymore because the car will be like a cab. but this auto parking sounds good for granny that cant drive. . instead of smashing up bumpers, they can hit auto and not worry about parking.

they are making cars for lazy people. just like the thing that tells you when someone is in your blindspot. one day it wont work and you wont know, you'll switch lanes without looking and cause an accident. some of these technologies are good and others are bad.

I wonder it it malfunctioned would the accident still be your fault? After all your not the one parking.

Personally parallel parking is one of my favorite parts of driving...nothing is more satisfying than a perfect parallel park job you did yourself!...until that dude in the CRX beater just slides in and takes the side of your car off

I still think this is awesome.

I would parallel park more often if my car had this feature.

You really only find parallel parking spots in big cities or near the beach, so I don't need to do it very often anyways.....

mr goodwrench...german cars i have owned have always been as reliable or more reliable than the american cars i have owned...granted they are more expensive to fix but thats another story..z24 cavaliers are pretty expensive to fix as well...im tired of your crapping on german cars...you always say "over-engineered" that statement doesnt really make sense from an "engineering standpoint" but what would i know about that?

...geeze this german car right here is terrible unreliable ebay only nearly 2 million miles on it...get over your hatred of the germans please and just try to take it easy...you might have a heart attack stressing yourself out about it

thats cool, but its bad if someone walks behind your car or anything like that. It looks like it takes an image of whats there as you drive by, but what happens if it changes in the few seconds that it takes to park? Dosent seem safe

CR,
If you have had good luck your BMW, then good for you and wish many miles of just the same. As for over-engineer... a nice simple example is the cup-holder or lack-off. On a Asian, American, French, etc car you either set your cups on a dish or open a compartment door, Germans tend to make look like Olympic acrobat that flips-folds-opens, then after a few uses, that over-engineered contraption is cracked because it could not hold crap.
And that is one hundreds of examples out there.
Also, I have had my fair share of German experience since I've worked with them for close to 6 years. It is sufficient enough for me to comment on them, don't you think?

Lastly, compare these two quotes... .

With you even bringing a Ebay car, now who is the one that is "stressing" about it? lol
Last thing I need is someone to tell what to say or not what to say. Plain and simple, don't like what I post--then just scroll down, it is just that easy.
I think the BMW you own is rubbing off a German/Nazi-dictatorship mentality aura on you.

you are right about me stressing..howevver i feel that your negative attitude about german cars is whats causing my stress and you know that thing about the cupholder...tell me how many cupholders you see on any bmw's until at least the year 2000...tell me how many cupholders you see on any porsche...i agree there are certain things that are "over complicated" not engineered in some german cars...ie volkwagens w12, and a few others but there are plenty of over complicated american cars and japanese cars. For example that ridiculous envoy or traiblazer with the sliding rear roof...how many hours does it take to change the waterpump and timing chain according to the gm service manual? how about the mechanically closing trunks on mid nineties buicks...once again you are right about me stressing about it but ive just been watching it for years....sure there are instances when germans overcomplicate things but in my experience it is no more "typical" than any other nationality of car. and its not just this bmw that i have had that has been good to me...ive owned more than a few including the first car i ever had a 1984 528e that i drove from 100,000 to 300,000 miles with the originial engine, transmission, differential and a lot more original parts than my cavalier which required a new motor at 130,000 miles and a differential and transmission at 140,000 miles....sadly it was totaled at 160,000 but anyways no hard feelings i just had to finally say something

I work for bmw,and i agree with mr good wrench about it being over-engineered.Do you know how many control units these cars have in them? Its crazy. We had a car that needed a new antenna amplifier. No big deal right? No,in order for it to work, you have to reprogram the whole car.It can take anywhere from 5-6 hours to program a car.In my oppinion, the 7 series is the worst car bmw ever made.So many bugs in these cars its not even funny. And about the cup holders, they are the worst at designing a cup holder. The price for the cup holder on the older e38 7 series was close to $200,and thats not including labor. And most of the dash has to come out to replace it.Its was very common for them to break.Dont get me wrong, they are nice cars and all,but i wouldnt own one that is out of warranty. These cars go through brakes and rotors like crazy. There are so many stupid little things that go wrong with these cars and it will cost you an arm and a leg to repair it.

That is from the "2 million mile" car on e-bay. I've got nothing against german cars but 2 million miles for any car is pretty much impossible, especially when it's only been around 20 years. As for the parking feature, it seems it might just be cheaper to learn how to drive.

GM used to have a Million Mile Car club up until about the 80's... Most of the cars were service vehicles (Impala's etc.) and mostly highway driven cars.

German cars are fine if you accept them for what they are... just cars. Sometimes there's engineering for engineering's sake (witness: the original BMW iDrive), and sometimes it's useful while being invisible (like rain sensing wipers). At least they're doing something to advance the state of the art.

^^^ very true.

moreso BMW is in a rather precarious position. The wide array of creature
comforts that made a luxury car a "luxury car" have become common place
in standard models (power heated leather seats, ABS, and HIDs). In order
to maintain its luxury status-quo, brands like BMW are forced to incorporate
more innovative advancements to maintain their image (ie GAM's mention
of idrive).

Unfortunately, the problem is two-fold: (a) your regular consumer can only
handle so much technology -- most bmw owners wanted idrive like they
wanted Chris Bangle behind the design of the BMW brand. (b) most
importantly, the standard brands I mentioned earlier are incorporating
luxury features at a break-neck pace -- its something you didn't see in the
80's and early 90's.European cars could maintain the amenity threshold
and further focus their brand reliability. Competitiveness is forcing luxury
brands to add new features to their lineup in a far quicker manor. New
technologies don't get tested for real world reliability to their required
extent. BMW's new Grav 60 architecture fits this case.On the one hand it
makes BMWs stiffer and more fuel efficient, on the other hand it means
that no third party body shop on earth can fix your bimmer's frame should
an accident arise. It's a definite [X] against BMW's current reliability claim.
A reliable car is one that's easy to drive and easy to maintain. The later no
longer applies to BMW (like it used to). Don't get me wrong, innovation is
always important to the auto industry and I praise BMW for pushing the
limit. Having said that, innovators seldom get to have their cake and eat
it too -- don't expect current BMW's to be this innovative and as reliable as
their 80s brethren.
