i was watching something on the History channel a while ago talking about this. i think its Brazil, where all the cars have this FlexFuel technology. The oficials said it was easy to transfer over to running on Ethanol and you dont lose any power. if anything you might gain 1 or 2. now that i see these GM commercials for it here, when will it fully affect everything? when will we be able to fill up on the alternative fuel, which should be way cheaper than Mid East oil? i think i heard that all 2007 + cars will be equipped with it, but can anyone elaborate.
ever watch the news bro. It's all over the place. All 2007 Chevrolets/GM with a 5.3L engine are flex fuel vehicles. Some Gm vehicles such as the 2006 Monte Carlo and the Impala's are also flex fuel compatible, r at least one of the engines that they have are compatible. So you can use one or the other or a combo of both. Some pre 2007 GM vehicles, ( no cars, just trucks and SUV's) are eqipped with a flex fuel, but not all of them. As far as being to use them in our cars. No such luck. The entire fuel system as well as the vehicle itself has to be made to accomidate for the two fuel systems. If you use that fuel now, you might as well say bye-bye to the car, it car seriously mess up the car. Stations are starting to go up and they opened one on the other side of town, so in a few years it will be in full affect.

Its actually kinda interesting that you brang this topic up. I was listning to John Makinaw (sp) on the AM 950 channel here in detroit. He said that Sabb was trying to push the Ethonal fuel in Europe. Brazil and Switzerland are the top countries that provide this type of fuel. Now, here is the intresting part, The Sabb 9-5 turbo gets about 20% more power from the high grade ethonal fuel and 15% better gas mileage, and sabb sells about 70% of their ethonal fueld cars in Switzerland. I'd persoanlly like to see North America swith over, but here in Michigan (detroit subarb) its kinda hard to find those type of gas stations, so I dont think it will be a HUGE selling point.

I used to work at a dealership and pretty much every SUV for the last 3+ years has been flex fuel. It will be interesting to see what happens once the new fuel becomes commercial.
You can't outrun the radio.
Notice tomorrows Craftsman Truck Race from Daytona is the
GM Flex Fuel 250
that'll certainly get ya noticed

the ecotec was offered with a natural gas option. just shows that GM was thinking of alternatives to gasoline for a while now

I don't really care about GM building vehicles that can run e85, I just want them to start selling it around here so I can get high octane fuel cheap.
RIght now unfortanaley if you can find E-85 it might be more expensive than gas. We are getting the Ethanol from Corn but Brazil is getting it from Sugar Cane which is a better source of Ethanol.
Right now you can use 10% Ethanol without problems and heck you might be without noticing because Gas stations don't have to tell you that.
Heck even at 50/50 that should help reduce the use of Oil.

It's actually cheaper than gasoline, anywhere from like 35-75 cents cheaper per gallon. You don't get the same mpg as gasoline, but it is still pretty comparable, I think you get like 2 or 3 miles less per gallon than gas, but it is still cheaper.

I believe I read somewhere that any vehicle can in theory be converted to run on E85. All that has to be done is make sure no part of the fuel line is aluminum, and alter the timing of the engine, although I don't specifically know what has to be done, though I would assume retarding it somewhat?
Of course I could care less, since the nearest E85 station to me is in Tucson, which is almost 150 miles away. There are NO E85 stations in the Phoenix area. Which means in Arizona GM is throwing away millions in this advertising campaign for nothing.

i dont even think there is a station in NYC that has this available. i havent seen anything for it. im guessing sooner or later GM is gonna have stations popping up. i mean they wouldnt advertise and equip cars like this for no reason. and like someone said already, most 2007 vehicles will have it so maybe by the end of the year we will all see them somewhere
ShiftyCav wrote:i dont even think there is a station in NYC that has this available.
Nope, the entire Northeast does not have a single E85 station.

Talk about the biggest waste of money ever. This big advertising blitz by GM is just a few years too early. The infrastructure is not in place. It would be like someone coming out with a hydrogen powered car today and breaking the bank on advertising - sure there are probably thousands of people that live near a hydrogen refueling station, but at the same time there are millions that do not. Its just a huge waste of money.

If you do some research the only reason that E-85 is cheaper is because of Goverment subsidy.

Nah, they read it, they probably just don't like you...
But you made pretty much the same point I was trying to make at the end of your post. The infrastructure is just not there yet. I just think this big GM ad campaign is coming a little too early. Now if we get some E85 stations here in my area, I might consider one.
One other thing to consider, though. I've read that FFVs typically get anywhere from 5% to 20% (depending on driving) loss in fuel economy. Even though E85 is cheaper right now, in some places it is not 20% cheaper, so in the end you could potentially be paying more. So then the benefit is the approximately 5% gain in power, and the benefit to the environment. There is no benefit to the pocketbook.

Retard the timing??? It's over 100 octane, crank that bitch up. You need to increase the flow of the fuel. Increase your injector/jets and fuel pump size. A guy on the turbo mustang forums with a 1995 Mustang GT with a 331 cubic inch, twin turbo system with twin T70 p-trims w/ .58 AR, T56 tranny, solid roller: 242/236, .600 lift. made 1066rwhp at 30 psi with 20 degrees of timing on e85. He had 3, 255lph Walbro in line fuel pumps and 160# injectors. No alky, no nitrous, no ice on the intake, etc. The fuel costs 2 bucks a gallon but yoiu will see a decrease of about 15 percent in your fuel mileage. They've been testing the setup for over 9 months and have had no negative side affects such as corrosion.

It's not a complete waste, because it shows consumers that GM is actively seeking alternative fuel production models. And I guess some moron might be persuaded to take a closer look at GM vehicles when purchasing their next car.
A complete waste in advertising is the fast food restaurant Sonics. They play their commericals up here in New England all the time, but the nearest Sonics is in Virginia/North Carolina or something like that.

aint that the damn truth. its nowhere near the Northeast but i see more commercials for that than McD's and Burger King combined

But do you guys have a Rally's?
Yeah this is off topic
So lets get back on topic
But Mikey you are right about advertising the E-85 just so they can get people to look at their vehicles.
Nevermind the Rally's comment wrong place. We get the Checkers commercials but no Checkers they are all Rally's.
And we get the Sonic commercials where I am at but I only know of 1 Sonic around this area and that is 30 minutes away.
It's nice that GM and Ford are finall getting the picture about the fuel efficiencey thing. Too bad it took $3.50/gal gas prices to do it.

unfortunetly i think you guys have it a bit wrong... you LOSE 20% power when using ethonol... but on the upside.. just use more "fuel" and you can create more power.. i saw the history channel thing on brazil and ethonal and thought it was a great idea/.. who cares if its 20% less when alls you need to do is turbo and you can easily offset the loss of power...

So let me get this straight. You say that you lose 20% of your power and all you have to do is use more fuel. Meaning you have a decrease in fuel economy. Meaning you're saying the same damn thing we are.
