IS250 question
Wednesday, March 08, 2006 11:18 AM
Hi I searched online but couldn't find any info on how the new AWD system works on the Lexus IS250. Is it all time all wheel drive, is it electronically controlled. I called them but they couldn't give me any info either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Road & Track has a section on a story about all wheel drive cars on their website and the is250 is one of the cars they tested. I believe its their top story right now.

It is is a All Wheel Drive not a 4WD which means it does not carry a transfer case. It is all electronic. In normal driving the torque splits on F-30%/ R-70%, when ASR sences slip it will send torque F-50% / R-50%. But all four wheels has power. The IS250 AWD sits about a 0.25” higher than the regular IS250 and IS350 for extra ground clearance. The wheels are not staggered like RWD models.

Thank you Mr Goodwrench so does that mean that it can't just send power to lets say one rear wheel it has to be evenly distributed either in the back or the front not seperately when needed on one wheel.

^ Correct.

The only AWD platform i can think of right now which can transfer side to side as well as front to back, is the Acura RL.

My sister actually just got one of these. I am looking forward to taking it for a spin.
