2.5

Hey got a quick question, I used to have an 87 Oldsmobile Calais and it had a 2.5 DOHC in it. Was wondering if anybody knew about that engine. The one I had burned oil real bad and still had really good get up and go. Was wondering if anybody knew anything about them.

im thinking it may have been a 4Tech, dont know too much about them other than changing oil on that motor was somewhat of a pain without the right tool.

The tech 4 was not a DOHC, it was pushrod, and i think it was the granddaddy of the 2200OHV. The 'rents had an 87 grand am with that engine. It was up to 250,000 mi on the clock when they traded it with no major problems. Good for about 35 mpg too. Sadly, they traded it on a 1992 grand am with the 2.3 SOHC. Two blown head gaskets and a cracked head in under 50k miles.

yea...boost would be nice...yea

"Iron Duke" you all mean. And it was a OHV. That engine uses gear driven cam shaft (No chain or rubber belt) and was a sturdy engine, even GM Performance Parts had stuff for it.

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.
ZZP XP cam, 1.6 rockers, 105# springs, speedbuilt FWI, 3.3" modular pulley, TOG headers,
3" exhaust, flomatched injectors

iron duke is more for getting grandma to churcvh tan anything else. granted few 4bangers match it for off idle power and the fact that you can't kill it. as far as a preformance motor the heads can't flow for crap and the whole motor is cast iron so it is heavy also. you will find some people that are still iron puke fanatics though

I'm not sure if the engine that I had is what you all are talking about, I clearly remember seing DOHC on the engine's cover, and the spark plugs were in the middle like on the 2.4, there was just no idi cover. The spark plugs went in the middle of the cams and on the bottom cam cover it said 16v 2.5 DOHC. I think I burned about a quart of oil a day in that thing, I could sit at a traffic light and have my car surrounded in smoke lol. I still remember the first day I bought it for $300. My dad drove it home for me because I still had my first car a 78 Old's Delta 88 with a 350 rocket swap. We raced and that damn 2.5 beat me by about umm.... 5 cars? This was years ago. And plus that Calais had a huge weight advantage on me. And not to mention the Delta still had the granny rear end in it.

I am going to super simplify this, is the exaust mani next to the firewall or the radiator?

if it is near the firewall you have the 2.3 q4

if it is near the radiator you have 2.5 4tech aka iron puke

Was the Calais a 442? If it was, you had a H.O. 2.3 Quad4. I remeber we had one of those as a regular when I worked for Olds/GMC truck. The shifter was around 3ft tall.

The iron-duke is one of my fave GM 4 bangers ever made. there tough and make decent hp (120 i think), and run forever.
