AWD car options??
Monday, August 14, 2006 2:37 PM
Ok, I am buying a car for the GF in a couple weeks, but I would like to get her something that will be good in the snow, so AWD, but also good on gas. Hopefully at least 30mpg+.

Other then the Vibe AWD, what else is there I should be looking at?

Also, what is the first year of the Vibe AWD?

Thanks.

AWD and 30mpg? Do any of the AWD models do that?

All of Subuaru's cars have AWD. I think the Toyota RAV4 has one? Dodge Caliber has one or will. That's off the top of my head.

Buy a GTO because AWD is a good 200lbs lighter then a GTO on a bad day. Just kidding, Subarus sound like fun in the snow so I'd go with that.

And if ^^^that^^^ is above your pay range, look for an '88-91 (I believe) 325ix.

I'd say Subaru also, my mom just bought a Legacy just before last winter, and my g/f's mom just bought a WRX just before winter as well.

my business partner used to own a 1999 Legacy/Outback
wagon with the 165hp 4cyl engine -- it felt like a boat, it
drove like a boat, it had horrible pickup, and it was a bitch
to backup. I hated every moment in that thing.

my friend just purchased a 2006 impreza wagon with the
same engine (only now bumped to 173hp), and it drove very
well. The handling, braking, and acceleration were excellent.
It's amazing what a 300lbs difference yields.

if you want an affordable awd car - look for a 2002+ impreza;
stay clear of the legacy. If you want a 30mpg awd car - keep
dreaming. You need to understand that even the most thrify
of engines will have a thirsty appetite for gas in a heavier car
(because it will have to work harder).

hmm, well my mom's is a 2005 Legacy, but she also drives school buses and now transit buses for a living, so I'm sure she doesn't notice it drives like a boat and there other vehicle is a 2005 Sierra Z71

its definitely relative. if you feel comfortable behind the wheel
of larger vehicles than you'll enjoy driving a legacy. I like cars
that feel small. My Jeep is a pleasure to reverse in parking,
lots, and the 3500lbs 325xi I test drove Wednesday, although
the same weight as the legacy, was 1000x more nimble. The
impreza wagon was far more nimble than the legacy as well.

Dodge Caliber SRT-4 awd.
300hp and awd. Sits up sorta high so may be good for snow.
I kinda like that thing but not sure when that model will come out.

I am all that is man

Re: AWD car options??

the base Legacy is a bit of a slug, but the GT has quite a bit of get-up-and-go. i'd take an LGT(hell, even an LGT wagon...they're pimp!) any day.

01) the caliber SRT isn't out yet (like you stated).
02) it won't have an automatic option
03) it will fetch an ultra-premium when it's released

suprised nobody said the Suzuki Aerio SX !?
a 2.3 DHOC 16-valve motor and the exact same power and TQ numbers as an Ecotec. 150hp/155tq...if you liked the power of the 2.4L Z24's and want AWD and reliability with a 100,000mile warranty you can't go wrong with the Aerio SX.....They move.
