no offense, but it always amuses me when people buy beater cars to replace something that's already considered a beater car by 99% of the population.

that said, you can find tons of Js for around or under a grand. i would opt for a Corolla or a Tercel, but i'm partial to Toyotas.

I use a J-Body ...

1993 Baby Blue Beater Box ... RS 3.1L.

God knows Im not driving the LSlut in the snow or rain ... and it comes in handy when the T/A is in pieces being worked on and I need parts. Just last weekend I moved a rear end in it.

Good ol' Cavalier Crap Boxes ... I love 'em.

Your just acting like the J-body cant be a nice car. I mean people want winter beaters when there cav is a show car or maybe they want to to keep it nice. A beater is a POS 89 tercel that is rusted out.

If it is just going to be a winter beater, find something fwd that runs and is cheap. That'll give you a broad range of cars to choose from.

That may be, but (though im selling my J ) who gives a dang if 99% of the population thinks J's are beaters. If someone is getting a beater to use for the winter instead of there J, they obviously like it enough not to want to get it wrecked in winter Not sure if that makes sense, but it does in my head lol

Sorry. J's ARE basically beaters guys, at best basic transportation. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I wrote this post a long time ago, a real long time ago, back in 94.

a 7-8 year old stock j body with an avg amount of miles on it (12k a year) 84-92k is a beater.

I agree with Urban. You can pick up older Cherokees for really cheap. Pick one up with the inline 6 and you will have some decent reliabiliy also. That motor can see 250,000 miles easy and still run like a champ.

Have a good one,
Justin

An old Saturn maybe, saw one in the local paper for $1400. If you have mild winter, 2-4 heavy 6"+ snowfalls an old W body or heavier fwd car might be better traction wise.

old 90s cavalier, escort, older jeep, 90s lumina, 90s blazer, civic, jetta, old celica, anthony old and cheap is a beater car. my beater car a 1996 ford escort LX hatchback with 126K on it car was a pos. only thing i really hated on the car other then the cars itself is it didnt have ABS so if u slamed the breaks in the snow your going for a nice little ride sideways.

Re: Ideas for winter beater?

If you get a decent amount of snow I'd get an old beat up 4x4. No matter what you choose you're not gonna get much for a grand...

toyota truck/4 runner, nissan truck, ranger/bronco2, samuari/sidekick/tracker, amc eagle, commanche/cherokee, s10/blazer, dakota, etc

The older full size 4x4's are nice too but it all depends on what you want. An old v8 4x4 will eat you alive in gas for a daily driver in the winter.

my car is a beater
@!#$ piece has somethin stupid wrong with it at all times

The best winter beater I've ever had was a 91 Suzuki Swift. 1.3L auto 2 door hatchback. That thing never got stuck in snow, but if it did, I could easily push it out myself. The hatchback is extreamly usefull, and it barely uses any gas.
