As the title says I've been looking for a project and in my neighborhood there is a 82 2 door cutlass for sell. According to the owner it has the 302 with headers and a true dual exhaust. The trans has recently been rebuilt and has a shift kit. The car was in storage for three years than taken out in Jan 2006 (when the trans rebuild was done). My question to you JBO is what is involved with properly storing one of these cars ( I'm gonna need to store it) and two what’s the main problems I should look out for.
he is asking 3,200 can. for it.
I hope he means an 307 olds or 305 chevy? G bodies like to rust in the usual places...
i'd buy it and swap a 350 in there pronto
If its a Canadian car, its a 305. Much easier to swap in a 350 that way
I'd recommend checking out

That is in the long term plans, and the 305 was replaced in 88 under warranty because the block cracked.
Also I've read the 350 swap is relatively easy, my question is what about the 5.7L LS1 or the tuned port injection engines from the 80's F-body's?
I looked for rust, I didn't find any except on the back bumper. Undercarriage was undercoated when new and as a result looks pretty good considering it's 24 years old. I took it for a test drive, transmission shifts firm and it started instantly despite the fact it was cold, so that can only be a good sign.
So I'm gonna find a place to store it for the winter and consult my finances and let you guys know. My cavy may have a new friend soon.
also I did search a bit but came up with nothing, has anyone put in a manual transmission in a G-Body? I realize that would be an involved process but was wondering.
check the frame behind the rear wheels....G-bodys are known for that rotting away
Also the body panel between the rear window and trunklid.
^ that seemed good actually. Also I put in my offer of what I could afford 2,500 (CAN) we said he was looking for a little more than that but he'll give me the opportunity to match any offers he gets from the buy and sell ( add goes in Thursday ). So we will see what happens.
Positive Thinking.
I have had at least 6 different G-bodies. The frame behind the wheels is where the rust and rot will be.
^^No problem. I was going to do that w/ my 83 Cutty, but it was too far gone (needed new engine, tranny, rear end, rear suspension, exhaust, heater core, radiator, etc... etc... etc...)
(brings thread back from the dead)
After not willing to except what I could afford he put the car in the buy & sell. He got a few calls but no offers better than mine. So after some talking we agreed on $2600 pending a mechanical inspection and air care (emissions) telling me something I don't already know. For now, the current plan is to do the above next weekend when we are both not working / going to school and finish the deal.
I'm assuming you all would like pictures,
which I'll Post next weekend
Comments?
I think he was trying to sell it for a little to high... however the fresh tranny can be incorporated into the cost (as you would have to incur that if not more should you have purchased the car and needed to do it yourself)
Blue Book is around $1000 (Flawless, low-mileage, private party)
Yes, please post pics
One of these days I'll have to get mine back on the road

You should do it!!
As for the tranny that was a real plus for me too. The cars in great shape and I'm happy with the price. I think I paid about $600 over the average price for where I live. Besides the rear bumper its in great shape for a (about to be) 25 year old car, even the tires are new-ish (80% tread left) so I think the price was fine. However 2-5 years ago he could have easialy gotten $4000 - $6000 for that car as everyone around here wanted one to make a gangster lowrider out of them and were willing to pay.
P.S. Kardian thanks for all the helpful web links!!!
i remember back in the day when I was buying my first car
it was between 3 cars
1. 86 Grand am 3.0 V6
2. 85 Regal V6
3. 86 Monte Carlo V6
I ended up with the grand am (i still remember the chick I bought it from had really huge tits lol)
I now found a place to store the car for winter, and its free. The only catch is that it is outside.
So my plan was to do the below to store it over the winter ( here in vancouver it rains all winter instead of snowing for the most part ) using the below advice I got from Oldspower
Short term storage(ie, 3 or 4 months)
Change the oil and filter
Over inflate the tires by 5lbs, cold
Add gas stabalizer, fill tank, drive for 15 minutes to get gas with gas stabilzer to carb, park. Do not start the car until ready to bring out in spring, if you do run the car, drive it, make sure the engine gets hot(more than 15 minutes), running a car for 5-10 minutes a month is not good for the engine or exhaust system, as it allows moisture to build up and cause rust. Fogging an engine for short term storage is not neccessary. Disconnect the battery.
Inside storage, leave windows down a bit, put desicant pads(moisture absorbant) inside car, with a few moth balls to chase off any rodents.
Outside storage, get a good breathable car cover and secure it so the weather doesnt blow it off, windows up, add desicant and moth balls
However I was planning to start it once or twice a month and let it get all the way to operating temperature.
What do you guys think?
And what should I look for in a car cover? This will be my first time storing a car
Really, any car cover will work.
You want something that is UV resistant, water repelling and breathable.

As long as you do run the car about 20-30 minutes at least 1 time per month, it should be fine, but not necessary for the short term storage. For the battery, put it on a trickle charger and do not leave it on concrete.
Ok so I have the car now
AND SMILES ALL AROUND
The car is big, cool, and soo comfy.
Unfortunately I'm been driving it around continuously to hear that sweet v-8 sound that I haven't been home during daylight for pictures. However, I'll get pictures soon. My only (small) disappointment is that it drinks tones of gas, I knew it would be a gussalar, but damn! I put in a full tank today and recorded the km, so I'll know for sure in a bit just how bad it is.
Overall I couldn't be happier.
Thanks again for the advice from everyone.
And the pictures

And the Drivers View
I was actually wrong when I said it had a SBO 307, it actually has a stock SBC 305 (being a canadian car)
enjoy the pics!
Dayum thats a clean car. I'm jealous

Looks like a clean car.
Like everyone else said. Swap in a 350 ASAP.
My first car was a 1983 Buick Regal with a 350 from a 1970 Gran Sport, true straight pipes from headers back. The car was loud as all hell. For an 83, it had almost ever option, power seats, power windows, power door locks. Man, I miss that car.
