Looking at a tC...

Ok, so I read some of the posts already here on the subject, as well as posted this on scionlife, and also TST. Basically, just looking for some information about these cars, and get some peoples thoughts on em. Already priced and spec'd it out, just waiting to see how much college loans are gonna be costing me. Ive had the chance to drive one in auto, and looking into getting on in a 5spd. Now, the questions I wanna ask.

1. Reliable - how is it? What things have had to be replaced? Any major issues, besides having to do basic maintaince?

2. Comfort - How comforable is it on long drives. I live 6 hrs away from my parents, and drive home a bit to see them. Im looking for something that isnt gonna be too bad on my back and @$$ for a ton of hours.

3. Speed - I know this isnt gonna be a super car outta the box, but how well does the motor react to mods? TRD vs aftermarket, which is better (besides TRD leaving warrenty in tact)

If anyone else can also mention some new(ish) cars in its class, lemme know, and ill look into them too. its just that every time I try to find a car that I like, I always manage to come back to this, or a WRX (which is slightly more then what I wanna spend on a new one)

As of 32,xxx miles, I've had a grand total of one issue, a bad fuel cap. Which if you're fairly car savvy, you qualify as "nothing".

I've made a few 4+ hour trips in my tC, and didn't have any major complaints. That being said, I'd much rather have been in an LS430 or a big cushy Town Car, but for a car under $20K, the tC's comfort is fine.

Speed, out of the box, feels like a stock low output 2.3L Quad 4. Great torque in the low RPMs, but falls flat on its face about 5K. If you're wanting something on the level of the GM 2.4L supercharger, the TRD blower will suit you just fine. Provides reliable, available "pop" that is warranty friendly. If you're wanting all out power, go aftermarket turbo, definitly.

Overall, it's a great car. My only true bitch about it, is that leather isn't offered out of the showroom. If it was, it really could qualify as a "baby Lexus", because as far as comfort/luxury/style, it's really unparalelled for under $20K. I like the fact that it's still "tuner friendly" for me to keep my inner car guy happy, but doesn't look out of place when I drive to work parked next to a VP's Lexus or Acura.

I can give you asnwers to all three questions, but you may not like them.

1. My sister has almost 100K on her 04 and shes had no problems what so ever. Oil, tires, sparkplugs, and filters are the only things that were changed.

2. She drives it nonstop as you can tell by her mileage. She drives from Pittsburgh(home) to places like Detroit and DC and Boston with 2 other girls and sleeps in it on a regular basis. She drives to those places for concerts mind you.

3. Its a tub. I swear my 2200 cavy has more balls off the line and she has a 5 speed. It doesnt like revving as far as i can tell.
Also, i got to drive these on a regualr basis when i worked at a toyota dealreship for about 6 months, and we sold alot of them. So personal driving experience is in this advise im giving.

GL with your decision!

She has either an xA, xB, or an '05 tC. There were no 2004 tCs produced.

Definitely not a tC then. If you think your 17.5 second 2.2 is faster than a mid 15 second tC, then you better start sellin what you are smoking because it must be some good @!#$.

1. So far, 21,000 miles or so on my 2006, and nothing has had to be replaced. I've only done regular oil changes and the airbag recall.

2. I went from Tampa, Fl to Houston, Tx, and then down to Corpus Christi, TX in a matter of 18 hours. Pretty much non stop driving. Then, on the way back, the same thing except it was straight from CC to Tampa. over 3,000 miles in a matter of 3 days (actual driving time), and I was fine. I didn't have any back issues or anything. Sure, I was a little stiff everytime I got out of the car, but I was in a similar position for 18 hours straight!

3. I haven't modded the engine on mine, but it's not due to lack of available parts. It's fast enough to get me to work and back though. And, in the rare case I take it to a track, it will pull high 15's - low 16's consistently on stock tires and a crappy driver.

Thanks.....Great info...

And I know about the stiff sitting. Been in a car for about 13 hours heading down to MI from DE, and it was kind of annoying sitting there for a long tme, but this was also in a Dodge Caravan.

I don't like them. I can never get comfortable in the passenger seat. The few I have been in the most were all low mileage rattle boxes and they all were 100% stock. The hatches rattled and the road/suspension noise drives me up the wall. Just my opinion and .02.

We're talking about a Scion tC, not a j-body...

The hatch does have a small annoying rattle and the sunroof cover gets kinked up all the time, but it's a VERY quiet car on the road and you wouldn't know you're doing over 100 in it.

J-bodies rattle all over, the tC limited their to the rear hatch

It's true though. The hatch rattles and it's annoying as hell if you have the stereo off. However, some dealerships will actually investigate the problem and attempt to fix it. Of course, you could always do this yourself too.

A GM dealership would probably laugh you out of their service department.

I haven't noticed any road noise though. Sure, it's not as quiet as a Lexus, but it's a $17,000 car with a glass roof (meaning impossible to deaden sound up there). It feels way more solid and is less noisy than my 96 cavalier did even after 150 sq ft. of sound deadening.

My car on TEIN super streets with pillow ball mounts and Falken Azenis 615 (stiff f'n sidewall) rides quieter than any stock tC I've been in, but that's just my personal experience. I haven't experienced a "VERY quiet" tC myself.

Re: Looking at a tC...

I guess I lucked out on the 3 J-bodies I have owned with the rattles. I can't say any of the cars did and they had 260K, 190K, and 37K miles on them.

Re: Looking at a tC...
Friday, April 20, 2007 8:42 AM
well, bring me a set of the Gravana pillowball mounts and you can ride in mine and see if it's the same as what you have dealt with before

I'm going to listen more intently when I go home today.

Considering the dash, doors, and rear panels are all made out of hard plastics, I am very surprised you didn't hear any rattles. My 96 rattled, my ex's 02 LS Sport rattled (no interior panels were ever removed), and Alexis's 99 sunfire rattles.

quick 30 seconds, with a few extra spent in hosting pics since Imageshack sucks

Notice that they are not all confined to one particular area either.

Again, I admit the tC has an annoying hatch rattle. So did the two threads you posted from SL. The second one is a sticky that says "common problems: Hatch rattle & Wind Deflector." No one has denied that one.

Re: Looking at a tC...

To be fair I ran a search on both using 'rattle' and searched topic and message bodies on both forums. SL doesn't allow you to search by topic only like JBO. That's about as apples to apples as you can get without diving into it any deeper and spending mass amounts of time. Keep in mind JBodies go back to what '85 and Scions '04?

1624 matches and 41 pages of results matching rattle on SL.

67 results and 3 pages on JBO.

Either Dave has mastered search results or Scions really do suck. I think it's the Scions that really suck.
