HHR Question
Monday, May 14, 2007 10:26 AM
I'm shopping around for a HHR , I'm wondering if any of you have done road test yet.
Here is my question.
How much of a deffrece in power is felt from a : ls 2.2 5 speed VS lt 2.4 auto?
speck for mpg are pretty much the same , but there is major deffrence in car price over 5000$

reason for me asking is this: well my 2004 toyota corolla ce lease is 281/month it's basic ce 5 speed with a/c ,it's great on gas, but not much fun to drive .
My wife does not really want to spend more then 300/month on a new lease.
has a gm employee i get cost on the new 2007, and i have a extra 2000$ one time credit that i can used, and other discount i can use.
so leasing a lt fully loaded with sunroof fog.. would be around 315.00 tease are approx with trade
and a ls 5 speed with sunroof around 270.00 these are approx with trade

2.4 175horsepower 165 ft/p torque
2.2 149horsepower 152 ft/p torque
not much of a deffrence
i preffer a 2.4, and if i go with that engine i will go auto, simply because i'm tired of driving a stick
but if i have to go for lower payment and engine then it would deff be a 5 speed.

but selling that extra 15$ per month to my wife will not be easy
that 270.00 a month is a sure deal.

With that equipment and using the "butt dyno," none really. You will need a timer to (see) the difference.

Test drive both and see for yourself. Don't rely on what someone on an internet forum tells you.

2.2 5 speed if pretty close to a 2.4 auto, quarter mile wise. I drove both, and ended up getting the 2.2 with a manual, because of the price difference. I can haul around four buddies fine, but the 2.4 does have the nice added torque of pulling out into traffic. I would not get a 2.2 auto. They are turds. I mean SLOW. Check out www.chevyhhr.net for some more info, they are VERY nice over there.

The only problem I have with my 2.2 is wheel hop, but you would probably have that with the 2.4 also...if you drive spiritedly.

Biggest complaint is paint chipping on the rear quarters. GM will repaint the car once, free of charge. It is a well known issue. "GET RUNNING BOARDS." You have been warned. This fixes the problem. Other that that and a few 05's with water leakage problem on the passenger side, they seem to be great car/trucks. Also make sure the fuses are pushed down under the hood. THEY WILL BE LOSE from the dealer. Machine puts them in lightly, and some are not seated well.

Enjoy your HHR. I'm sure enjoying mine.

At the dealership I work at don't really seen quite a few come in key not leaving the ingnition, non for the water leak, and I'm pretty glad
the fix for that problem is pain in the arse, have to open the hvac case with out removing from vehicle and install a gasket on the I've done a few on cobalts and the hvac on them is plastic welded together so you have to break the welds and install screws most of time your upside down trying to fix the leak though. There pretty neet cars though, I like the small windows and the plastic cargo area. It scratches easily though.

my gfs mom has one, base model automatic. performance wise its much slower than my cavi. rides better though. the interior plastic, particurlarly the dash looks super cheap...way, way too heavy texture on it. also has that greasy, cheap plastic look, like old army men toys. overall its a decent vehicle, but i doubt id own one.

We bought a 06 HHR when they first came out, it was an automatic. We definitely liked the mpg!!!!! It rode and drove great, but by 9,000 miles we were having problems.. We traded it off at 18,000 miles. It would surge, and sometimes would not start, and also would go dead , ... They told me I was crazy, so driving at about 70 one day with a log truck behind it died. It read ENGINE DISABLED.
The piece of @!#$ wouldn't do anyting and about got me killed( crazy huh) Anyways had to replace the whole wiring harness. Got it back and dash lights , radio etc would dim down & come & go. Thought great more problems.

We traded it in on a Pontiac g6 coupe, , so anyways 3 days after we get home from trading the dealership calls ( there 250 miles away)
and told us after we left they pulled it around back to the clean up shop, and it never started back up. Towed it around to the shop and the altenator was putting out too much voltage burning up $5 GRAND WORTH OF SENSORS AT COST. After that though, they said it still wasn't right, broke down on a test drive and had to be towed back.

The air conditioner wasn't very cold, and things that like.. However, I did like the vehicle.... I would probably buy another one.. The warranty process was easier than with Pontiac

There is a TSB that will correct the problem you had with your HHR. I believe it only happened on EARLY model HHR's, and the problem is now fixed. It also can be caused, by the poorly inserted fuses as previously stated.

thanks. for the comments

Here is what i got, searching through this forum www.hhrclub.org
http://www.hhrclub.org/forums/gforum.cgi?post=16645;search_string=miles%20per%20tank;#16645
most people talk about an average of 400 miles per tank. GM list the tank at 16 gallon that would mean 25 mpg
now obviosly no one ever whent dead empty at 400. so let's say 15.5 gallon then it's more like 26 mpg
but
http://www.hhrclub.org/forums/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=19693;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25;
most people in this post are talking about 28-32 mpg ?
so that would mean 434miles to 496miles per tank (15.5gallon)

so i'm a bit confused on the actual gas milage

best i ever gotten from my corolla City driving is 422miles 13 gallon = 33 mpg
summer time average best 385miles 12gallon = 32mpg
winter time average best 355miles 12gallon = 29mpg

with gas pricing at what it is here in canada , it's really important for me.

we live 45 minutes north of bham alabama, we made many drives to gatlinburg tennessee on a 1/2 tank gas. we averaged about 33-35 miles a gallon..... it got better gas mileage than either of our 2 cavaliers. Believe me if you want something for gas mileage this IS your vehicle.... .

Ok so if you're looking for fuel efficiency, in a wagon like vehicle and want a GM vehicle for discounts, bingo: Pontiac Vibe.
They are rated at 30/36mpg vs. HHR's 22-23/30mpg. My father bought a basic 5-speed one a year ago and he is extremely happy. He is getting 31-33mpg and that is not highway, not mixed city-hwy, but all city. He has not done a trip all highway yet, but I would not be surprised if he'd get 40mpgs-hwy.
The car is solid even after one year of use, very well built. And being light weight at 2700lbs the car is peppy for what it is.
Being that they will be replaced for 2008, you find some good deals for a new 2007.

My friend just got a brand new HHR and she just fell in love with the thing. Looks like I need to check out her fuses real quick.

I think the gas mileage has to deal with how GM gauges work. In my Sunfire the gauge shows empty when I still have 2-3 gallons in it. That'd make the mileage better but then again I don't know if they're gauges have the same issue as mine.

you dont get mileage info by eyeballing a gas gauge

you fill up and set trip to 0
then you ride to near empty
then you fill up again.
the amount you filled up the second time is the amount you actually used. dive that by the miles you drove and you have your mileage.

I was refering to how people were saying 400 miles to a tank. If they fill up when the gauge says they're empty and just go by how many miles they got and not how many gallons they put in it makes things complicated. Thanks to city driving I'm at 22-24mpg.

Were getting 26mpg with pretty much constant city driving, we get close to 380-400 miles to a filllup. if were highway driving we will get 450 miles or so even while crusing at 80mph. im sure if we were doing 65mph on the highway we'd get even more then 450 easily. car drives great, ive grown to like it, we test drove the 2.2 auto and it didnt feel like it had anywhere near the power of the 2.4 mainly in passing car situatuion on roads so we got the 2.4 auto and have enjoyed it since. were up to around 32,000 miles in 18months of ownership and other then the fuel pump issue (sometimes it wont start on the first key turnover and this is a known issue on the o6's) other then that we havnt had a single issue.

The Vibe doesn't ride nearly as smooth as the HHR though. Vibe corners well, rides rough. HHR rides like a dream, doesn't corner as well.
