Hey guys, I'm new here, been lurking for a while and thought I'd show off our Achieva race car project.
We've got a '92 Achieva SCX, and we'll be racing in the
24 Hours of LeMons in Detroit. The short story on the race is that it's a 24 hour endurance race on a short road course. The tricky part is that the budget is $500, you can only invest $500 total into the car aside from safety items.
So, we picked up our '92 Achieva for $400. It had a shot third gear synchro, the brakes were trashed, some of the interior had been spray painted yellow and red, there are a few spots of rust as you'd expect from a Michigan car, but generally speaking the car is in pretty good shape. We've already got the car stripped and are beginning to get it prepped for the race. We're hoping to sell a bunch of stuff off of it so that we can fund some improvements (handling and weight reduction, particularly) to prep the car for racing.
Our goal of the race is first and foremost to have fun, but we also want to represent with an American car. Last year's winner was a Japanese car, and lately the American auto industry has been taking a lot of heat. We think that on this tight budget, this little quad 4 Olds should be a force to be reckoned with! Hopefully we can get enough of our stuff sold for a fair price, maybe get some good trades for our SCX/W41 parts, and find some good deals on some race prep parts from you other Q4/GM enthusiasts.
Here's a picture of the car when we got it:
Here's some of the team hard at work stripping the car down:
So, keep an eye out in the classifieds for stuff we're selling and stuff we're looking to buy. This forum has been pretty helpful so far, thanks gang.

I can appreciate why you're doing it, but it still makes me sad to see an unusual part of automobile history be stripped like that.

Well, the most unusual thing we stripped from the car was the red and yellow spray painted interior pieces, so this car isn't exactly a pristine model.

Most of the SCX specific parts are being sold/traded, I'll actually be posting them up here later today/tonight probably. Stuff like the FX3 adjustable suspension, SCX bumpers (with special cutouts for foglights and dual exhaust tips), W41 engine cover, 8000 rpm/140 mph instrument cluster, etc. are all being sold off so they'll continue soldiering on in automotive history, hopefully on much nicer cars than this one so they'll be a better example.
Thanks for the comment, hopefully we can represent!

I guess I should have said that it saddens me that a car like that would be allowed to degrade into that condition. The fact that the pictures make me miss my identical '93 SCX even more.

sell ya my black 92 , extra motor and trans(well original bad head gasket) , and some extra parts
scx bumpers arent to hard to find , since they were shared with the SC model , struts and cluster are though , although depends if the struts actually work
Thanks for the tip Daniel, the guys at quad4forums have already been helping us out with some of the build, buying parts, finding cheap parts that we need, etc.
I posted some of our stuff up for sale, check it out guys, everything must go and it's for a good cause!

Very nice! I love the idea on using the Quad-4. There used to be lots of endurance races with the Achieva SCX.
Hope you win. Let us know on the outcome.
