anyone disagree????
Tuesday, August 21, 2007 9:08 PM
my friend has a inline 4 ford ranger and wanted a cheap intake... is pcv pipe thick enough not to melt, if it is not touching any metal components...I know it is ghetto rigging it, but will it work or just melt...
the pipe is about a 1/16 of an inch thick... any feed back or flamming welcome...

PVC's melting point is printed on the side of the pipe.

pvc emits a gas when heated too...... and i dont think you want your engine sucking in that gas

what he said. use ABS instead. stands up to higher temps, sidewall's thinner compared to overall diamiter (so same OD tube will have bigger ID) and it looks better, too

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

umm... use metal.

big plastic tubing not made to be around very hot fluctuating environments just isnt a good idea. and there is no reason for it.

go buy some metal pipe and ruber couplers.

ABS/metal and silicone couplers. Either that or fer God's sake, get a real intake.

PVC may stand the temps, but it's heavy, and hard to polish the interior of to ensure smooth airflow. It does off-gas, and if the engine sucks in the VOC's... well, who knows..

if it is schedule 40 or class 200 pvc pipe it schould be thick enough to work. but pvc tends to expand a little bit when heated and shrinks when it cools off. if you are going to make an intake out of plastic cpvc duct is the only type that should be used, it is light weight, thin, and has a higher durability when heated. you could also use cpvc flame retardant labwaste pipe but it is thicker and heavier than an aluminum intake and would have no advantage at all.

you would be better off just buying a cheap intake off of ebay.
