Hey you guys i need some advice theres a guy who lives about a mile from me and he is selling a 87,88 or 89 camaro i dont remember the exact year, anyways the car is stock and i was wondering if anyone knew what kind of boost can it handle or if it can even be turboed, is it too old or would u even consider it? any advice would be appretiated
Depends on the engine. Either way you can run about 6-8psi pretty safely. There are no kits for them, but people have been doing TT setups a lot more on them. That was my plan for mine until I wrecked it. There is a section on ThirdGen.Org all about it. Look under Power Adder (maybe FI).
I know what has been done a lot is you take a set of shorty headers. Flip em upside down and weld a flange on it for a turbo. Than mount turbo to it.
Alot of it is also going to depend on the mileage of the engine, probably what engine is in it, and how well it was maintained.
You can't just slap a turbo on anything.

Sure you can...just wont last long =P
exact year, manual, auto, 8th figure of vin code, trim package,
help ME help YOU. I have owned 3 3rdgen f bodys, I know them well.

why are you laughing, the 8th figure tells me what motor it has. I used to have a @!#$load of rpo codes memorized to but it has been a while.
and those motors can take more than you think, if it is an auto you will probobly blow the trans before the motor. it is also not uncommon to blow the rear before you blow the motor to especially if it a manual

I think you have your facts a little confused. You make it seem as if the manual is strong. If its a manual you'll blow the tranny before you blow anything. The auto will hold a good amount of power. The rear is going to be fine unless you start putting down some good power. You'll have traction issues unless you go with a good pair of drag radials or something. Then a hard launch you might want to think about that rear end.
RPO codes aren't going to tell you jack @!#$ about how much boost that motor can hold. You'll know what options it has. Other than that who cares. Only codes you need worry about are G92, 1LE etc... Basically look for the G92 code. If it was a 1LE you would know the price would definitely reflect that unless the guy was an idiot. Even that really doesn't matter about boosting the motor. Just means you have a little better cam, and 327 or 345 gears depending on auto or manual.
If its a manual its a 305 unless swapped. I would imagine its a TBI. Thats easy to tell also though. You don't need RPO codes. Does it have a carb on the top? A TB? Or does it say Tuned Port Injection on it.
Exactly. The only manual transmission offered in the cars that was worth anything was the World Class T-5, but even then I'm not so sure that it was stronger than the auto.
An automatic Third Gen would hold boost alot better than a manual, unless it has an aftermarket manual swap with something other than the T-5 that came in the cars.. like the T-56 for instance.
And like Rabbit said, the codes will tell you what's in the car.. not how the car has been treated, not what's wrong with the current motor, or if the current motor would actually even support boost in it's current shape. You really don't want to mis-lead someone with bad advice when it could mean the difference between having a boosted motor that runs and one that blew up because you thought you knew what you were talking about.

Seems if there is a thirdgen JBO bandwagon now. Just do a search here and you'll find some info. I really think you need to do some reading over and Thirdgen.Org though. Good luck with what ever you go with. I miss mine a lot =/ I still want a twin turbo Iroc. If I ever get the money i'll have me a twin turbo LS1 Iroc Z
justso you know, of my 3 3rd gens, I have been through 5 700r4's, 2 rears, and only blew 2 motors. one of those rears was an aussie rear (85 t/a with factory rear disc option and overhead console *pimp*) to which I will say held the most.
I had 2 friends with manuals and they never heard a peep out of thier transmissions. and there were 305 tpi motors made with the wc t5. I *think* they went to the wc t5 89.
both the 305 and 350 tpi and h code carbed 305 motors can take more than you think. never really boosted one myself but have sprayed 100- 150 repeatedly which I imagine does more damage than the 8psi stated earlier.
and my response was also based of of trying to determine if what he was looking at would be worth buying or even worth boosting. in the origingal post he doesn't even say if it is a v6 or really anything. I like to get a feel for the whole car in question before I start giving advise

what a waste of space......
anyway...the more info you can supply us the better, if the thing has 190 on the odo then boosting it without a rebuild would be a dumb idea and a waste of money.
the 700r can support a decent amout of power the T5 cant handle as much but is still a decent tranny.
if your going to be putting down massive power, which i assume is your plan...your definatly going to want to upgrade the rear end or you will be buying a new one after it granades it self while your driving
Hey guys thanks for the advice and all but the i told the idiot to hold on to the car for a day or two so that i could gather some info and some cash but he sold it to his nephew but thanks to you guys anyways
