Starting with my 97 civic.. need advice pls
Monday, May 26, 2008 6:04 PM
Hi.
Recently i got my 2nd car- 97' civic si 2 door. there was couple basic mods already when i bought it (cold air, and some kind of small filter that comes out of the block and originally there should be a hose to the intake- no clue if it makes any difference, but makes lots of noise on high revs), not mentioning a @!#$ty job on a custom paint job :/. Since the civic is more popular then my previous Asuna Sunfire, i can find parts on ebay pretty easy so i have couple of questions about some of them. I will admit that my budget is very limited as im a student, and thats why im not asking how to make my car go very fast at low cost, i just want to know if it will make ANY positive difference on my car, and if those parts will actually work.

First i found a stainless steel high flow exhaust system from heads to the muffler (excluding cat) that costs $150(including shipping), and local store quoted me on over $700 before tax. And i also found a high flow cat (street legal) for again $150 with shipping. So my question is: for that low price will it make ANY improvement to my car and is it a good deal?
ill posted the links (if its considered as advertising and its against the rules i can take it off)

Also i was looking on turbos (who hasn't :])
I found many complete turbo kits in price range starting from $400, i was very surprised about the prise, so same question: is it worth it and will it actually work?

Again im not trying to make my car go super fast, but i dont want to throw my money away neither.
If anyone know any other "affordable" upgrades that are worth it ill be very grateful.

P.S. If the post is in the wrong place i apologize.

^^^^ ya.... your on the wrong forum dude LOL

But.......

Don't worry about exhaust being to low of a price..... it's just pipe... all you need to worry about is the quality in the pipe, welds, and coating.

And that turbo will most likely blow your engine unless you put a different waste gate on there to limit the boost (assuming it really does make 25 psi like it says) also... you will prob need bigger injectors and possibly a re-tune.... although I don't know Honda's so you'd have to ask someone that does about that type of stuff....

If you want to run that much boost.... you'll probably need a rebuilt engine with forged internals, injectors, better fuel pump, possibly cams matched to the turbo, and whatever Honda's use for some kind and fuel management and spark curve (re-tune or something).

You'de be better off asking this stuff on a honda forum.

No, really, there ain't. I'm on my second right now, first one died at 283k miles in a car crash. I bought it at 214k, in that time put in an alternator, battery, muffler, and timing belt, and it ran like a top. To the best of my knowledge, it'd never been rebuilt, I was the fourth owner and I got ahold of the original owner to find out what he'd done (not much) but the second owner I dunno about. I've now got a 94' Si, with the D16Z6 (as opposed to your D16Y8, IIRC), bought at 168k, now at 207k, and I've only done a timing belt and battery in it, although I need to do a clutch some time very soon.

The D series motors are good for what they are, but don't bother turboing it unless you want to redo the bottom end first, they're known for throwing rods at high horsepower. And that also means you have the wrong turbo picked out, you need a D series Turbo (unless you have a Type R and neglected to mention it). Your engine code should be on the timing belt cover. If you really want to get it moving, get a front clip with the motor and tranny off an Integra with a B16 or B18, and swap that in, then get a turbo kit for it. I say front clip because IIRC you need a bunch of front end parts for a D to B swap.

1. If it has a D-series motor in it..... dump it.
2. If it has a B-16 .. yay ! .
3. Just give it some bolt on's for now, maybe even a v-tec controller if it is a B series ect.
4. Avoid that kit. CRAP.

My local 1/3rd mile paved track has a whole bunch of various makes and models on wednesday nights, and three different classes: big endure (v8s), little enduro (4 bangers), and ladies (4 bangers), these cars are stock motors. Last week (first race of the season) there were at least 5 or 6 cavaliers, I saw 2 in ladies (one second gen, one third gen) and 3 or 4 (2 second gens, one third, and one that I think was first, but I'm not sure) in little enduro. There was also an 89-91 CRX Si and an 89-91 Civic DX hatch in little enduro, and a 92-95 Civic Si (hatch) in ladies. The CRX Si and Civic Si absolutely dominated, the Cavaliers were mixed in with the rest of the pack of Mustangs, Neons, and even a Pinto (which came in 3rd in the feature, after a Prelude).

I love my Civic Si, it'll probably last me for several more years at this rate. Cavaliers, on the other hand, are perfect for that track: they get the crap beaten out of them, like they deserve :p
