Whats your favorite Classic Car?
Tuesday, February 03, 2009 4:57 PM
Try to include some surprises in here. Everyone knows that people love '69 Camaros and '67 Mustangs. Be a little creative. So, with that in mind: No cars made after 1992, No hot-rods, No lead sleds, No gassers, No heavily modified/custom/one-off cars, No 64-72 Super Sports/442s/Grand Sports/Grand Nationals/GTOs of any kind, No 1955-57 Chevys, No 1949-52 Fords or Mercs, No 1968-70 Chargers, No 1970-74 E-Bodies (Challenger/Cuda), No 1967-81 Camaro/Firebirds, No 1964-73 Mustangs... and extra points for any car that isn't a coupe, hardtop, convertible or top of the line musclecar.

My list:

1991 Jeep Wagoneer
This is the granddaddy of all comfy SUVs and it looks so retro and distinctive that you just can’t hate it. Unlike modern boats, it’s big but not disgustingly so. It’s well proportioned and looks nice. This is the American Ranger Rover. A sophisticated off roader with lots of luxury.

1990 Buick Electra Estate Wagon
Gimme one in dark brown with wood paneling on the side. Yeah, it’s a wagon, but it’s the last of the original breed and it is hella nice. Sneak in a 3.8 Turbo or 3800 S/C for some extra oomph.

1990 Chevrolet 454SS
Looks like any other black Silverado, has a completely anemic and ineffectual big block engine (An argument could be made that the 350 was just as fast because it was much lighter) and on top of that gives you atrocious gas mileage. However, ever time you drive it Al Gore cries. That’s reason enough for me to want one.

1984 Chevrolet Camaro Sport Coupe w/ T-top
Saw one of these darting around town when I was 16. It was black with a tan interior and had a Hurst T-grip shifter inside. Also had big wide slotted mags in the back and skinnies in the front. The rear was jacked up with Hijacker shocks. I dunno who owned this but he was obviously trying to build it up like a modded 60’s car and was pulling it off. Even the digital dash gave it a little bit of weird character.

1979 Dodge Aspen Coupe
Saw a candy apple red one with Stockton Milner chrome reverse wheels. It’s the last of the classic Dodges that still looks good. The 1980 version had those horrible square headlights that never quite fit with the car.

1974 AMC Hornet X
This is the car James Bond drove to chase the baddies in The Man with the Golden Gun. What more could you ask for?

1973 Plymouth Grand Fury 2 door Hardtop
Big, loud, obnoxious and comes with a big block Chrysler engine. It’s also the last of the truly nice looking B-Bodies. The end of the era for those cars.

1973 Plymouth Gold Duster
Chrysler must have had an overstock of tan paint because they made a zillion of these. If you’ve ever tried to find a lookalike car from your youth you’ll know that it’s almost impossible to find a classic in the same color/engine/trim configuration that you remember, but the Gold Duster was so popular that even on eBay you can find 2-3 of these cars a month for sale on it. In my hometown alone there were five of them and I remember watching a fire safety video as a kid and the car they used in it was that same freakin’ 73-76 era Gold Duster.

1969 Cadillac Fleetwood 75 Limo
The nicest looking limousine that Caddy ever made, unlike later models it doesn’t seem too long.

1968 Ford Falcon Futura
The runt of litter for Ford. Nobody likes these cars, but I think they look rather nice. They kind of have the same goodness as 64-66 Mustangs without the pricetag and with some nice lines.

1967 Plymouth Belvedere Station Wagon
This is by far the nicest, coolest, fastest looking wagon ever made. Look at old NHRA Super Stock pictures and you’ll always see one or two being raced. The reason was that a lot of these came with big blocks and were the poor man’s Roadrunner. Sadly, for that same reason most of these cars were cannibalized for their engines and not a lot of them are left.

1964 Chevrolet Malibu Sedan
I much prefer the two door or convertible, but the four door isn’t ugly at all and I’d love to drive one as a daily driver. For some reason these cars make me think of the West Coast and I couldn’t drive one without having Ritchie Valenz on the radio.

1962 Pontiac Grand Prix and 1960 Pontiac Catalina 2 door Hardtop
Both these cars are awesome to me. Give me one with that grandma’s couch transparent light blue interior. It SCREAMS the late fifties/early sixties like nothing else on this Earth and these cars were very nice to drive. As musclecar prices have gone up these cars have kind of taken a backseat but they were really fast. If you wanna know where Pontiac got the reputation for fast cars, this is it. While the Impala made do with 283s and 348s (for the most part) the Ponchos had 389s like the ones the GTO would later have.

1986 Dodge Omni 2.2L Turbo. Nuff said.

Ugly, yes. Fast as hell and a blast to drive, yeahhhh!!! (as an ex-owner myself)

Definately the best sleeper ever made. 5.0L killer in it's stock form.

Yeah, not going to go by the rules here. My favorites: '57 Bel-Air, '50 Merc coupe, '40 Ford Pickup. Best part? My dad owns them all so one day I will own them all (and probably have to fix them as well). '57 was in a wreck 3 years ago and still needs to be fixed, the Merc needs to be completely restored, and the Ford needs better paint and a good motor ('49 flathead is nice, but could be modded...).

1957 Chevy Bel Air - black pillarless coupe. rules? HA

1976 Chevrolet Caprice - love the looks of them and the size

any Corvette but if I had to choose it would probably be the 1978 - 1982 Stingrays , when they put the fastback window in. with t-tops of course

Olds Cutlasses, especially the 12982 - 1988 G-body style, especially I had one that I loved.

1968 Chevrolet Biscayne - mostly because my Grandpa had on when I was a kid and I absolutely loved that car!

plus many, many more

Vette Stingrays - Just a GREAT styling to those cars

Air-Cooled Bugs - No idea why, but I think that they can be BA

69 Camaro SS - Blue exterior on black exterior. Absolutely amazing

Those are my top 3.

my cousin has one, all original aside from the motor/street drag radials. such a sexy car. Had a 340, blew it up, built a stroked 500 cubic inch big block in his garage, easy 9 second car. He says its so fast hes almost afraid to drive it, i have yet to ride in it since the new motor. But when he fires it up his whole house rumbles. gives me such a hardon every time.

5. 1992 Dodge Spirit R/T
Nothing except for the Taurus SHO could compete with it in the Sedan class. (Not even offerings from BMW, & Mercedes !). 224-BHP Turbo inline 4. yum.

4. 1983 Mazda RX-7
-50/50 Weight distribution. a loaded weight of 2600 pounds. Handling American Manufacturers could only dream of at the time. A true glimpse of emerging Import dominance for the next 26 years.

3. 1987 Buick Regal "GNX"
-What I considered the LAST great car Buick made for that era. Buick became a black hole from 1988-2004. ALmost all offerings were crap in that time frame.
