thinking about buying a porsche.

as the title states,

i detailed a porsche 944 (non turbo) the other day. I LOVE THIS CAR.

1986, perfect condition interior (other than drivers side bolster one is worn out) and there is no stereo working.
exterior, could use a repaint, doesn't need one right away i buffed it and it turned out pretty well (6/10)

5 speed manual, black interior
trunk carpet needs replaced
110,800 miles (original) - didnt look at service records, ran well, shifted smoothly, clutch felt firm and grabbed
guards red single stage paint

owner wants 2,800 dollars + tags

what do you guys think? ill post some pictures when i get them off my phone and onto my computer tonight.

more of a weekend car for me most likely, would eventually plan an LS1 swap because its apparently really really easy.

C/C appreciated

I wouldn't do it. From what I heard those cars are not a good example of what a porsche is. And since its not even turbo its going to be slow. Price seems to be high as far as I can tell. I would keep looking.

No the price is decent I looked at them two years ago. They aren't the best Porsches I agree but they have an interesting and appealing style. You could turbo it if you knew what you were doing. They drive well and in all honesty it would be a neat toy especially if you don't want to heavily mod it. However it is a Porsche which means service and parts are expensive and to get to the transmission the whole engine has to come out. A cousin has one its in pieces but that was his biggest gripe. Honestly if I had the dough and since I need a car i would heavily contemplate it.

If you really want it find somebody that knows Porsches or works on them and have them give you their oppinion not just on that car but on how that model was.

yea water pump on those goes for 300 on ebay. Just to give you a figure of how much parts cost.

so

fuel pump 285
motor 755
tires 400
brakes 400
oil changes (everybody does them)
radiator sprung a leak 250
battery 90
plugs/wires...
suspension 400
etc...
and i havent beaten on this car.

not to mention, paint, body work, aftermarket items.

if i take the porsche body, drop the motor, swap an LS1 (very reliable)
repaint, etc...
it would be a decent investment.

just trying to either rationalize my opinion or toss it out before i end up with a lemon and a bad decision. the car does have very low miles for an 86

Do you do your own work? I do not know why the brakes would be so high, ( I am not trying to be a jackass just curious).

Ok swap in a ls1 then you either run it on a stand alone if you want to do fuel injection or you run it on a carb. I love the idea I through it around with a bunch of cars. thing is then you will have to fab at least the mounts obviously but it seems like an annoying amount of work. Plus remember it is German so it is overly engineered and I don't know how their electrical is set up that is what would make me question a swap. I believe it is running obd1 i figure it just because there was a turbo version.

The point is it may cost a decent amount of change to do. If you do it however I want pics and details because that would be sick I would love one.

They are awesome my uncle had one and needed it detailed to sell it in like 1998. It was a fun car to drive, not fast as the turbo version. I'd compare it to the driving experience of driving a Mazda Miata, not fast but lots of fun. And if it has the flared fenders one sexy ass car, believe me if it's in good shape, even 20 years old they still get attention.

That's a great price, i say go for it.

i have put a few sets of brakes on the car, right when i bought it, i put front pads, rotors, rear drums, and had to replace the drums in the rear. then i had to do it all again recently (3 years after the last set) so in total it has been about 400 dollars. which is not bad by any standard i dont think, the way i drive the car sometimes i wear through brakes. i usually just swap out pads and rotors together rather than machining the rotors.

and about the LS1 swap. there have been numerous swaps to the point where you (I) can buy a kit to swap it over. should that be to "pricey" i have a friend whose been a gm mechanic for years, he has swapped an LS1 into a geo metro, and a BMW 325 so he would most likely help a great deal.

i took the porsche out for a drive last night about 20 miles.

5th gear is rough getting in and out and the car shakes and wobbles at highway speeds...
this porsche 944 is not for me.

been looking at more well maintained porsches on ebay and the like.... not to shabby for some of the pricing and maintenance. may reconsider again at a later date.

meh to boxsters.
I would still love to get a 968... it's like an evolved 944 with a massive 3.0L 4cyl motor.

Which one was it that had the v8? 928 right? I came really close to buying one of those about 6 months ago. It was in really great shape but when I went to the lot....it wouldn't start, lol.

Speaking of, someone had one for sale in craigslist about an hour from me. It had a HUGE blower sticking out of the hood, looked amazing.

seems like youre just going against the grain to be different....... or you have very very very high expectations..... considering almost everyone, everywhere, including review magazines and shows and even owner feedback all agree that Porsche is pretty much *the* auto maker for german performance and performance car all around

Its one of the auto makers that 'sets the bench mark' ....... that everyone else must compete against and be compared to when they come out with something new (RE: Corvette and GTR......... or even the japanese in the 90s with the Supra, Rx7, and 300z ........ all were put up against and compared to Porsche models)

Now while the boxster may not be a fan favorite amongst the performance people bc it isnt a turbo model or bc it is a convertible, I think, and this is IMO, that it is great entry level sport car luxury as the build quality is high, the performance is good, and it handles very well

you don't rag on Lexus E or G owners because they couldnt afford the L series?

Well I do go against the grain, BUT Porche cars were good....in thier time.

An old 911 turbo was "the car" back in the day, but is now outperformed by almost every sports car rolling off the line.

With the new models , aside from thier higher end models, they are all just decent cars with a higher than should be price tag. They handle good, and perform ok, but IMO no longer live up to the Porche heritage they came from (again with exceptions to things like Carrera GT). To me the new Porche's are a Mid-life crisis on a budget car. Nothing more than a high prices Audi, which is nothing more than a high priced VW. They just do nothing for me.

I think it is funny you mention the boxer since even the porsche community thinks of it as a girl car. I would drive a non turbo 944 any day over a boxster.
