New SAE power rating for C6 Z06.

Detroit--General Motors has become the first manufacturer to certify its horsepower and torque rating using the new Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) test procedure J2723. The 7.0L LS7 engine for the 2006 Corvette Z06 is the first to be certified under the new test procedure at 505 horsepower @ 6300 rpm and 470 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm.

"The new voluntary SAE power and torque certification procedure ensures fair, accurate ratings for horsepower and torque as it uses third-party certification," said Jim Queen, GM vice president, global engineering and the general chair for the 2005 SAE World Congress. "SAE technical standards level the playing field and this certification procedure is just the latest example of the value SAE has offered over the past century."

"We're very proud to be the first to certify engines with the new procedure and pleased with the LS7 certification results," said Tom Stephens, group vice president of GM Powertrain. "Going forward, GM will certify its engines to the new procedure as we want customers to have accurate information when they make a purchase decision. GM encourages all manufacturers to do the same."

Damn straight! Hopefully NISSAN and HYUNDAI particularly take note! They are 2 of the biggest offenders, lowering the numbers when customers started finding out the truth (see the newer model Tiburon, as well as the Sentra SER spec V)

Or Mazda for that matter... They even had to issue a buy back on some of the RX8's.

The posted some phenominal numbers that when taking the car in for tuning, customers were finding thier baseline was so far below the quoted HP numbers, the excuse "drivetrain loss" couldn't even be used. They had to offer the new owners cashback, or a full buy back on the early RX8's... I am not sure if they upped the power or if they quote different numbers now.

I myself like what dodge did with the SRT-4 How they quoted it low...and it blew everyone away when they actually got on the dyno. Talk about satisfied customers!

Supposedly the RX-8 had a mode that made it almost impossible to get accurate Dyno readings, something about the wheel speed sensors and how since they weren't reading anything on the front wheels the ECU cut power to the engine which accounted for it's low dyno numbers, not that it mattered to many people, and Mazda did quote a lower HP number, but the problems still persisted and I don't know if anyone has gotten an accurate HP reading of an RX-8 on a chassis dyno.

I remember when the new tibby came out they had to give the people that already purchased them an additional year of warranty.
