AEM VS Mega Squirt, Battle of the Stand Alones
Monday, June 27, 2005 10:23 PM
Whats ur opionion? I was thinking about what to use for Engine management if i ever got turboed or whatever and i narrowed it down to these two, I didnt include Greddy's E-manage becuase i've heard it's far insuperior.
The Megasquirt will be a lot chaper, but will require cutting up my wiring harness and the AEM will just plug right in, Any one on here use mega squirt anyway

And if you use a stand alone does it remove the VSS?

Megasquirt = Piggyback fuel computer, not a stand alone.

Agree with shifted. I was udner the impression that mega squirt is mere a fuel delivery system.... NOT a stand alone.

Isn't AEM a piggy back too? Plus there isn't a plug and play version for us eithere. Just the universal which is cut and splice play . Why isn't this question in the boost forum too?

Correct AEM does not have a plug and play for J-bodies. I' just starting to read on the megasquirt, but seeing some nice things about it. AEM as well very good product can fully tune everything, once you get around the wiring of it.

Correct AEM does, but it has to be hard wired in.

the beauty of the platform specific AEM computers is you unplug the stock computer, then plug in their unit. DONE

don't have to rewire anything
don't have to buy certain sensors
it just plugs right in and works

course you may have to add certain things like wide band O2 sensors and the like, but for the most part it gives you TOTAL control with minimal install.

I'm going to be using one of the AEM EMS systems on my mkiii supra

the only thing that sucks is its kind of expensive...

Yes it is some money. Also the plug and plays have baseline programing to get you started.

Electromotive TEC3 is also compatible with stock sensors but will need some custom wiring to be properly installed. Of course you will need good hours of dyno tuning, but the results are amazing.

Also I heard some time ago some info about the Haltek H6K standalone ECU. That is a GM compatible Standalone ECU that in theory can work in the place of the oem ecu and using the stock wiring. Of course you will lose all OBD-II and other kind functions located in the original computer.

MegaSquirt can be used as a true stand alone, It just takes some extra work on some cars

No, the megasquirt can't do that, you are thinking of the megasquirt & spark, which is two computers that work together basically. Even then I still think you need to use the stock ecu to drive your cluster, and if you have an auto tranny, that too.

Megasquirt + spark is stand alone engine management. But as areplacement for a powertrain control module, it's not up to the task.

The only other optionthat might be viable is to use a "cracked" pcm from another application. But what you save in cash you spend in time, both learning about the system and tuning.

i'd go with the AEM vs. The Haltech tho

Haltech makes some truly fabulous management systems while pricy. But they rock. The AEM EMS, E-manage, and Megasquirt are all basically piggyback systems. The EMS is in between a piggyback and standalone, because the EMS includes some of its own sensors. If I was going to use anything, it'd be Megasquirt just because I know of a particular guy running mid 9s in a Chevy Silverado with a built single turbo 408... tuned on Megasquirt.

on a street car an emanage can't be beat because it allows the stock ecu to still handle all of the emissions stuff, and then the emanage can be used to add the appropriate amounts of fuel and timing retard/advance where necessary. Its also EASY. I had never used it before this past saturday, and by the end of the day I had Rich's (exterminator) 04 eco running with no leaner than a 12.5:1 (on a wideband)a/f ratio in boost through the whole rev range. And it still idles like stock on 440cc injectors.

Standalone is not worth the cost or the difficulty on a street vehicle, or in reality any cav that's making less than 350-400 hp. If you can accomplish your goals efficiently with a cheaper product, than don't spend the money and get the headaches of a full standalone.

MS is alot cheaper if you install it yourself.

It's not in the boosted forum because you don't have to have boost to have a stand alone or a piggy back system.

Shifted is correct, AEM's system is a standalone computer where you can change anything you want. A piggy back works off the current computer and only changes the amount of fuel you want (the mega squirt). Items like a Greddy E-manage will alow you to change the fuel and ignition time...I would personally rather have an MSD ignition system where I can change the timing AND add more spark.
