I have a 2004 Sunfire, andI have two questions with regards to external modifications:
1) How much weight is lost when switching to a CF hood? The stock hood on my sunfire is pretty heavy, it slams quite loudly when you trop it from 10". Does anyone have any approximate or accurate figures?
2) How much would a typical body kit for my car weigh? (All 4 pieces combined).
Thanks,
-Matt
you talking a fiberglass kit...or urathane? fiber glass kit would probly way about 50lbs, probly less.
Whatever something like the 'Streetfire' kit is made out of, or the Versus BMX kit, etc. I believe they're all fiberglass...
the streetfire kit is all urethane and i have a vis invader CF hood and it ways about 8lbs
yea streetfire kit is porlby gonna way the same if not more the stock.
not enough to make a difference if you race
So the VIS Invader hood is about 8 lbs? How much would you think the stock hood is?
Wow, so 40lbs - 8lbs = 32lbs lighter.
Is a body kit likely to be heavier than this?
Basically, I'm wondering if:
[Weight of Body Kit] - [Weight reduced by CF hood] =~ 0.
(So as to negate the weight put on by a body kit).
Yeah, sounds like it's 1/5 of the weight.
Does anyone know if the weight lost from a CF hood balances out with the weight gained by a body kit? Anyone?
seems like a pretty even tradeoff.. but like what was said.. its not gonna be enough to effect you in a race or anything like that.. maybe a couple lbs +/-
.
.
Oh, I wouldn't ever do something silly like 'race' in a sunfire. I want maybe +25 HP over stock, and i want it to look tastefully awesome, that's all
Alright, so I could cancel out that bodykit weight with a CF hood... thanks
Honestly, it's nothing huge...I hate when people say stuff like "Yeah your kit weighs a couple more hundred pounds and your spoiler is like 300 lbs", like seriously, an aftermarket bumper is slightly bigger than a stock one and depending on the material it's made out of, it'll probably weigh as much as stock or slightly more. Same theory goes for the rest of the body.

Wait - why does it matter what the stock parts weight?
Obviously I'm misunderstanding something here.
I thought that body kits went on top of your car's existing body - do they actually replace parts of your car? If a body kit weighs 50 lbs, are you adding less than 50 lbs to your car because you're removing some stock body parts?
Thanks,
Newb (matt)
Most kits replace the front and rear bumpers. SO if you replace the stock bumper that is 25lbs with the other the is 30lbs, you have only added 5 lbs. Just an example.

Awesome! So basically body kit + CF hood = reduced weight overall (not that it's much, but still, better than nothing).
Thanks!
