Hey, I was just wondering if there were any body men out there that use OMNI PAINTS. It is a PPG product, but it is cheaper. I havent used them enough to say they are a bad product, but I know that if you are just painting a quarter or something, bad idea, cuz OMNI will always be a shade lighter or darker, or sometimes it will match. I think that is why they are a cheaper paint. BUT, here is the question, I was wondering if anyone has used the OMNI base, AND CLEAR together. I have used just the base before, but spent a little more money on the clear, then I have also used an expensive base, but then used the OMNI clear. Both turned out awesome. I was just wondering how they are together. I am kind of hesitant, but, I am going to use them together on my door panels I think.
i painted my lip kit with it, no problems. i wasn't looking for perfection though.......

omni is ppg`s cheap line of products, for doin a few panles or just a piece the clear is not to shabby
but i would not do a whole car with it, but ppg`s dbc or dbu system is compatable with the omni clear, so i suggest goin with ppg`s dbc system and using omni clear
can i haz bondo

Very tru. I sprayed my whole car with the DBC basecoat and loved it. Then i used the Omni Clear and it came out very nice. I would suggest buying a the nicer basecoat and using the Omni Clear.

we did my brothers fire and it turned out awesome. it was my first complete paint job, and i got complete coverage and only one small run....
the clear is actually nicknamed "hunny" cuz its so thick, its actually harder to run i think
it all depends on how much you love your car? for alittle more you could just get the ppg i have used house of Kolor with ppg stage two clear and learned they work well together but it was a coin toss and the house of color paint was free (left overs) maybe test some paper on the wall first see if it orange peels or fish eyes?

Where in the heck do people get the idea that if something orange peels it's bad? Orange peel is NORMAL in clear. Go to a new car lot... every car there I'll gurantee you has some orange peel in it.
The fish eyes I'm hoping you're referring to the base... fish eyes are from leftover residue and poor prep work. Example: If someone's waxed their car before it's brought in to paint, and you don't get all of the wax off... the base will fish eye. And sanding does NOT get rid of chemical imperfections...
tru dat^^^^
i personally don`t like the omni base i do like the omni clear, just for maybe 1 or 2 panels
i perfer using ppg acroos the board

? orange peel fish eyes etc etc as a example!!!!!!! and yes you do get them in brand new cars there paint from robot arms and in the old day by hand and still got orange peel but go to a custom car show theres none in most why? cause there hand sanded after the base coat with 1,000 wet you can have a 100% paint job the whole point was he was going to use to differnt paints together my point was use a test panel (before) painting as to stay away from cracking peeling dullness cloudyness.. waxed there car?? thats why you use wax and grease remover i know all this and more but try to take in account that hes not at a bodyshop and might not know all the terms and wanted a good paint job so testing it out on a panel first make sence? anyway fst cavy it looks good

^^^ you just made it sound like if you spray and get orange peel it's a bad thing. 1,000 grit wet sanding won't buff out as well... you SHOULD use 1500 or 2000 for that "mirror" finish that show cars have.
Odds are a test panel isn't going to fish eye. And if he wants a good quality job he needs to get wax and grease remover and clean the heck outta the car to make sure he DOESN'T get fish eyes.
And wetsanding the BASE coat?? Unless you're highly experienced, and I do mean HIGHLY you should NOT wetsand a base coat... and NEVER wetsand a base coat that has metallics or pearls in it... because it's gonna screw up the metallics and pearls and make it look like crap. I highly recommend AGAINST sanding a basecoat. Even if you DO "wetsand" the base coat... you're STILL going to get orange peel. If you dont' want orange peel and can't live with it... wetsand and buff the CLEAR coat.
NO need for the cocky attitude. You've been on this site for almost 5 months, have next to nothing in your registry. Not that it matters much anyway... if you're a skilled auto body tech in the field for years. Either way, if you're gonna give auto body advice, make sure it's clear enough for someone to NOT misunderstand what you're saying.
I've been doing this for years, and big daddy has almost 3x the experience that I have on top of that. If you're gonna post advice, make sure it's clear, and ditch the cocky attitude. Not trying to come off as a biotch...
theres no cocky attitude someone was asking for help and i gave my own thoughts i never jumped on top of someone else's! i have better things to do. maybe everones thought as a group could help ? the base coat has orange peel so wet sand and buff the clear coat on top?? i have wet sanded base coat STARTING<<<at 1,000 grit then 1,500 then add a 2nd light coat with met was added then applied the clear it was a pearl blue and i still have it on dads car without any problems! 3years! so i know it can be done i have been working at the same place lyons autobody (1953) since high school 1989 buddy i really thing maybe your missing the whole point or just have a need to unzip it on the table at any rate there is things i don't know and yes i have next to nothing in my registry and if it didn't matter why say it? why not just ask? Here just 4 you i own a 96 cav 2.2 auto with 393,000 km at the moment its being takin apart and redone i just got the handle kit for it last night why no pics? i don't do before and after just after if ya think i was trying to be cocky i wasn't maybe you misunderstood relax your got your view out and yes you do make good point over all maybe we differnt shops have there own ways?? as for the biotch?? now whos cocky? i never started that!

my car also is done with Omni paint, the entire car too. Holding up just fine, and loving it
now not to go off topic but i hope what is being said will help ya out
having done ALLOT of show cars including my own, my expericne with painting is this , i personally do not sand the base coat only and only if there is dirt in it, any scratches came out, andything that i see is wrong i do sand with 1,000
tack off the car again, and appy 2 more coat`s of base, yes i have seen allot of guys sand base coat and use it as a primer to remove any imperfections in the panles
will it hurt?? no but do not do it on a kandy color or a tri-coat then ya got problems
so after the last coat of color apply the clear, 2 coats let it cure now sand that with 1,500 then re apply 2 more coats of clear, sand and buff it, the shine will amaze you!! any little pieces of dirt that ya might have missed will be gone after the last 2 coats of clear
now that`s what i do and have been doin for yr`s
like my old boss`s car i painted now almost 4 yr`s ago did it that way with ppg and omni omni was used for the underneath of the car
now back on topic
can i haz bondo

I don't know why all that didn't quote... but for one... I'm not a "buddy" and I can't "unzip it on the table" because there's nothing to put on the table... I'm a chick.
All I was saying was that your post was unclear, and to someone with little or no auto body experience, they could misunderstand what you are saying and possibly goof something up. You're the one that came off all cocky... I was just trying to help in the sense that if you're trying to help someone... you need to be more clear so nothing gets messed up that is all.
Punctuation is your friend too... lack of any punctuation makes a post hard to read.
Alright I didn't read the whole forum here because its long lol
but I use Omni paint reg. at the shop (im an apprenticing body Tech.) and I use the DBC paint system daily also. We use the DBC system as our primary but on older stuff omni since it doesn't shine as nice. PPG's high end stuff (the DBC) system is absolutly georgous. It sprays awesome if you use a very high quality gun. And on top of that they have a clear coat called the 4000 level. That is an amazing clear, use it all the time and if you can gt used to spraying it it lays down like glass. I havent started using any of their show stuff (havent even asked about it yet) but in the later months of this winter I will be redoing my car in whatever PPG's highest end product is. PPG is an awesome paint company as far as I have discovered.
