Carbon fiber hood painted black...wont show chips?
Wednesday, January 25, 2006 1:20 AM
There's a fiberglass hood that I'm interested in buying, but the place is currently running a special on the same exact hood in carbon fiber. So the carbon fiber version is on sale for the same price as the fiberglass version which is not on special right now. I was figuring why not just buy the CF version for the same price? Do CF hoods have any benefits over fiberglass?

I'm probably going to be painting either hood black to match my car because I don't like how the CF wouldn't match the rest of my car. If you paint carbon fiber black, do chips in the paint not really show up since the original color of the hood was close to black? This is kinda the main reason I'm leaning towards the carbon fiber because I was thinking it wouldn't really show the paint chips from rocks & stuff as bad as a fiberglass hood which would probably be white. Or would the carbon fiber get all messed up & scuffed from the paint prep process & it wouldn't really be black underneath the paint anyway?

i dont have time to read the whole post....but yes CF is better....its lighter. and you can also paint it. they were made to be painted i believe. most actually come with a layer of clear coat. you might have to take that off to paint it thought. good luck.

you can paint it. The stitching that you see, the crosshatch design isnt the carbon fiber. The carbon fiber is underneath that. And it is black in color too. The stitching is just to hold the carbon fiber in place and not frey

I was explaining the even if the carbon fiber somehow chipped, underneath the chip would still be black. I just thought i would explain that the design you see when you look at carbon fiber ie. a hood, fenders ect. (the crossthatch) design isnt the carbon fiber. Its a protectant on the fiber which is underneath the stitching to hold it together without freying. Who the hell taught you how to read?

ok, then you should know that what you see in a cf hood IS carbon fiber. ive done cf before. and what "stitching" are you talking about.

the way your first post sounds, seems like your saying the cf is under the "crosshatch design". care to explain

the crosshatch is the cf. its wooven together like that for strength

riiight, but cut away the carbon stitching, you will find tightly woven strands under that of carbon fiber, it doesnt even look like carbon fiber, i know its that way with bikes, my dad builds bikes. of course i know that the stitch is carbon fiber.....

I thought carbon fiber was the material that is woven together. Am I right or wrong??

Its NOT meant to be painted. CF hoods have a lot of dips and dimples in them, they'd have to be sanded smooth, right down through the weave.

I found out today that the reason the CF hood is on special for the same price as the fiberglass hood is because the CF hood has a few small imperfections in the weave on some of the edges near the headlights.

So that doesn't bother me since I kinda wanted to paint it black anyway. My main question though is if the CF hood was painted black, and the paint started getting some rock chips in it later on, would the chips not be as visible as they would on a fiberglass hood since the CF is already kinda black?......or would the prepping before painting ruin the blackness of the CF underneath the paint?

Also, the CF hood has a glossy black gel coat on the underside so I wouldn't have to get that side painted like I probably would with the fiberglass version.

well thats a lot of useless dribble that dosent answer your question.
So in answer to your question, I think you shoudl go carbon fiber. Its stronger and lighter. and as you asked when it chips it wont be as noticeable as the fiberglass ebcause it will be dark underneath instead of white.
Also if you ever want to sell it I'm sure the paint can be sanded off and the hood re-cleared so you can sell it as a carbon hood which will get you more money

Thank you guys for all the info & thank you too Mat. I think I'm gonna go Carbon Fiber. I'll probably see how it looks on the car first without painting it, but I'm probably going to end up painting it black to match the car. I guess it will depend on how bad the small imperfections are in the weave that they're talking about. It's just way too big of a savings to pass this up.

^^^i think you might like the cf look once its on.
also, depending on where the imperfection is, it could be cool to paint a design over the imperfection, and have part of the cf showing. either way, good luck.

i find that while it is way more difficult to get it feathered and not have a bump where the paint ends and the CF begins, the hoods and other body parts look very trick if you paint the sides of the hood, and leave a wide center strip CF.

the best work i have seen has the cars body color paint on the outside ring around the hood, and a small "hood scoop" shaped center left CF...it looks really good on cars that have black paint, or cars that are mostly stock without much done to them yet.
