CF repair?
Saturday, January 28, 2006 4:21 PM
I picked up an OEM hood and CF fenders off a local JBO member. They are from aerogear and only have a UV coat on them. Steve who i got them from has been using a polish system on it to keep them looking new. My question is can i get them clear coated at a body shop so i won't have to use a polish on them and instead use a car wax? Also one of the fenders has small crack/chip on it inner corner where it goes right down to the Cf and there are a few cracks which spidered out. This is the only imperfection out of all 3 peices and the UV coated having some discoloration from the sun which i hope the clear coat will take care of. Pics....

I'm sure a body shop could clear them for you. Call them and ask. As for the chip/crack, maybe you could buy some clear resin and repair it yourself. A body shop would know more about this than I.

I'd just sand them, repair the imperfections with an epoxy and paint them.

The easiest way to fix that would be to put some masking tape along the edge and use some thin CA (super glue). Just put a couple of drops on it and let it "wick" or soak it's self into the graphite. Do this a few times. Then use some THICK (gap fill) CA and slowly build it up and then put some thin CA on the spider web cracks and let it get hard. Then wet sand with 220/400 grit paper and then you can take to a body shop and get everything clearcoated.

It is repairable it is just the clear that is cracked and chipped.

I use a product called KLEER KOAT. if you use that epoxy resin (do not use fiberglass resin please!!!) drop some in there, it will harden, maybe 2 two layers of it, then u can sand it smooth startingn with 250 grit sand paper, then the shop can re-clear the hood for you.

The c/f fabric itself isn't ruined, so it is fixable...but still quite the task/.

I dropped it off at a body shop. The guy told me not to have it clear coated since the clear coat needs somthing to stick to and if there are minor scratches from the sanding, they may show through.
