Urethane Repair??
Friday, February 03, 2006 8:57 AM
So i learned my lesson about letting your friends drive your car around awhile ago, however my car is still suffering from it.

My RK Import Fighter Front has a Crack in the bottom lip that is all the way through urethane and turns into a smaller, hairline crack that extends up the bumper.

So the question is, what would you guys use to repair urethane? im guessing a special epoxy of some kind, any reccomendations/special techniques???

Use #142 Fusor for the backside and #114 Fusor for cosmetic repair on the outside. Start with the backside first by "V" ing out the crack. scratch up the area around the crack (about 2inches from the crack on each side) with 40 grit sandpaper. Now drill 1/8 holes along both sides of the crack and one at the very end of the crack to prevent it from going further. If you have some mesh tape (like what they use for drywalling), lay a piece on the crack (the same length of the crack). Oh if you have the adhesion promoter for the Fusor, spray that on before the mesh tape(only if you have it.....its not absolutely necessary but does help). Now take the #142 Fusor and apply to the backside over the mesh tape.....hurry cause you only have like 30 seconds to work with it. Use something to spread it out evenly and make sure it goes into the holes and fill in the "V" groove. Let that sit for a few minute then flip the bumper or what ever peice you are fixing over and cut off the excess that came through the holes. Sand the outside with 80 grit down to the plastic (remove the paint) and then apply #114 Fusor over the area of the crack (not too thick though). Let dry... then sand to an even surface. This is just a quick instruction on how to repair a cracked bumper....this can be used for all types of plastics including urethane, PP, TPO,ABS, etc. These directions can be used for other epoxys as well. You can also plastic weld it...alittle harder but works great. Sorry if some things don't make sense or are hard to understand but I hope this helps abit. I don't know where you can get the Fusor, Duramix, or whatever epoxy you are going to use. I work in a bodyshop so I have access to this stuff.....but I guess if you check out some auto parts they may have. If you have any questions just post and I'll try help you out.

in my honest professional opinion fusor sucks!! i never liked it never will
i would use 3m products
just one thing........everyone is always sayin urathene my bumper is urathene, do you see the iso code does it say polyurathene??? if not then it`s not that type of plastic
knowing what type of plastci you are working with is just the first step in a quality repair
so if you do not see the iso code to identify the type of plastic here is what you do cut out a small piece of the plastic from inside or somewhere get a cup of water and try to sink the plastic if it does not sink it is a offlien type plastic and a adheshion promoter will have to be used
if the plastic sinks then you can repair using any material on the plastic no adheshion promoter needed thus a non-offlien plastic
hope that helps also
no experience in repairing plastic don`t do it let a professional fix the bumper

can i haz bondo
