I searched the forums looking for information on making my own hood, but not much luck.
I've done some work with fiberglass before, and have read about using it for bigger projects..
I was wondering if anyone here has made their own hood, or front bumper maybe? Side skirts?
My plan for the hood is to use my existing one as a template, masking it off and making a mould out of fiberglass on top of it. Using this mold, I can then mask off the inside of it and fiberglass over top until I get a required thickness.
I might try to do a bumper also. I just miss my fiberglass hood from my 2nd gen. It didn't rust and it weighed nothing!!
Suggestions/tutorials/pictures, anything helps.
Thanks!
Hey, I'm in the process of making my bumper right now and the hood is no easy matter of making a mould and then glassing. If you want I can write you up something in my spare time but it'll be lengthy. Basically the only downfall to making your own is that you need to copy hte bracing from underneat the hood. Not only that but there are "lands" on the hood that have to be prcise so it sits on the car properly. The strut towers also have to have room under teh hood as well. I've created a cowl hood for my 98 cavalier convertible.
It's very time consuming, very expensive for all the parts and you must have LOTS OF PATIENCE. The front bumper is even harder to do than the hood although when mine is finished I'll have to get some photos of it up. (Still another few months in the process though) If you think this will be a weekend job, think again. A lot yourself (if you have a full time job I mean and a life) about 2-3 months if you have a mediocre knowledge of how fiberglass works. The rally hard part is designing a hood brace that will support all the weak parts of your hood , while allowing you to either duct in a scoop or cowl as well as keep room for engine parts. To be perfectly honest you may be better of puchasing a fibeglass hood rather than making one, especially if you don't have any experience with aerodynamic design or body work. To do it properly won't be an easy task.
Having said that if you would like I can try and make a step by step guide to making one. I warn you it may be fairly generalized, depending on your application and what you want to do with your hood (IE: One Scoop or many, a cowl, making the duct work so it's funcitonal.. etc)
IF you don't want something that is functional thanI would recomment just purchasing a scoop and mould it into your hood (If it's only for looks).
well hope this gives you some idea or insight into this project.
go here to learn about the layering prosess. now i would make a double sided mold. You make the shap of the top of it and the bottom of it. and have fun lol its hard! hole it works out for you!
