Just an idea, really, so don't yell at me for it. I was thinking about custom work for my 99 sunfire and aside from molding the body kit, i wanted to get the org's opinion on t-tops custom built into a 2-door sunfire. If anyone has tried this or think it's possible, i would like to hear about it. I'm sure that i would have to reinforce the a, b, and c pillars for it to maybe work.
After market t-tops are availble but t-tops are a b@TCH if they are not done right they will leak and when they start leak it get worse real fast. I had a Buick regal with t-tops and it just leaked so bad the floor started to rot not to mention the smell of mildew .
thanks man, I completely forgot about them leaking. What about sunroofs? Leaks as well???
What about a targa top, they look cleaner to me, and seem like that might be a little easier. But I'm not much for custom work.

It would actually be more difficult to properly do a targa top as the roof actually provides a key structural component for the unibody on a J-Body. As an example, think of how easy it is to twist a shoebox around when the lid isn't on. Then, if you add a lid, is provides significant structural integrity, making it nearly impossible to twist the shoe box. The same basic problems arise here.
What one would need to do is strip all of the bracing off a cavalier/sunfire convertible that provides the support. This would equate to hundreds of pounds of bracing needed to be welded on. With a T-Top however, one would still retain a majority of the bracing with the bar in the middle, although some structual integrity would still be compromised...
look up ratindahat. he had a green sunfire that he tried to make a targa top but was not about to do it due to the amount of work and bracing needed. instead he settled and made t-tops

if you don't want a roof buy a convertible.
i thought about doing t-tops for my car till my friend who had 'em on his Z28 told me how his leaked all the time, so i may just go w/ a sunroof

sunroofs leak just like t-tops would. imo if the car didnt come w/ a sunroof or anything then it shouldnt be put in

Not true. You can get an aftermarket sunroof that's just as good as the stock one (though they don't sit flush when closed) if you choose to spend enough money.
Just don't expect that sort of quality for under a grand or so. You definitely get what you pay for.
