well, Ive been considering doing this for quite some time now, and seeing as how i have some spare time on my hands, I've decided to get my car ready for paint. i am planning on going with a flat black, possibly some white and green pinstripes on the hood and boot. so what I'd like to know is, to all you primered/ flat black js, what method dd you use to achieve a lasting non patchy flat black? I've got some experience in body work and painting is no problem, but I've never done a flat... any insight into this situation would be greatly appreciated.
edit:
im not talking rattlepaint, my garage doubles as a paint booth.

My buddy has an old '50 Merc and he decided to go with the flat black like you want to do. I'm not a body man but I'm learning so I spent some time helping him with his car. It's really easier than you would think. He used a flat black base and then a satin clear coat. That's it. The process is still the same, primer, base, clear, but it has that clasic look you're looking for. The clear will still protect the base coat without being shiny like the typical paint job. Hope that helps.
John Deere Blitz Black. It's what we use on our hot rods. It's THE standard.
redeco- yah, thats perfect, exactly what want. anywhere to get it cheaper? 140 shipped for 1.5 gallons isnt bad at all, but still, if you own a cavalier, you always ask for a lower price.
bug- cant seem to find it anywhere... maybe shoot me a price or link?

I can't remember the name brand of the primer that we used when we FIRST painted the car flat black (but I can find out). I know that the color was called Hot Rod Flat Black. But we added just a little black paint in with it to make it a little darker. No clear.
Now mine is like 50 different shades of flat black because our intentions are to do the body work when we get the time and money for it. So, as we do it, we paint it and we can't get exactly the right amount of black paint in to make it completely match (didn't measure it the first time...our mistake). We've since given up trying to make it match and just used straight hot rod flat black (as you can see by my new bumper in my sig).
But if you're planning on leaving it like that, it should be ok. You may still want to use some sort of clear to protect it if you're going to leave it that way. Here's what mine looked like after first being put into flat black (it was a little dirty, obviously).
And almost a year later:

sans the flames, z3's and hood, thats pretty much exactly what im looking for... i dont know if i want to try and find a cheap body kit front, or buy a new z24 (i want fogs), so im still on the fence... but color is spot on

Well, obviously my car has changed quite a bit since those pics.
But I was only posting so that you could see the COLOR.

Sure thing.
I may have some in the basement and if that's the case, then I'll let you know tomorrow.
You may want to shoot me a PM tomorrow to remind me if you haven't heard from me by tomorrow evening.
I have memory problems. lol

My advice, go to a John Deere dealership and ask about it.
go to
HERE and if you can read it (might be members only locked, but join up anyway, LOTS OF INFO on customization) this place has extensive info on hot rod paints of all kinds.
also
HERE is the Google on it.
This stuff is also a rust encapsulator and is mainly used on tractor frames, but is said to be perfect on cars for it's "non-stick" properties, kinda like Teflon paint.
If your going to leave it like that and dont wanna put clear on it cuz itll make it shinier.. I saw on Pimp my ride(i know lmao) when they were doing this old car..(celeb i think) they painted it flat black.. and they used a flat clear.. someone made a clear cote where it will stay flat look.. i'd suggest that..believe since it was PMR that it was prolly made by HOK or PPG.. search for maybe flat clear or something and see what u can come up with.
