Removing paint off fiberglass
Wednesday, April 25, 2007 7:32 PM
Can someone please let me know what to use to get this done. I've been to a couple of auto stores and no one knows. Which is dumb but oh well. I read on the back of a paint remover can that said "DO NOT USE ON FIBERGLASS" a couple times and need something that I CAN use on fiberglass. fairly new to this so please help me out!?

isn't there a sandblaster that uses plastic bits instead of crushed glass/sand so you can use it on fiberglass and soft metals?

What excatly are you trying to do anyways?!? I dont see any reason why you would have to take a fiberglass peice all the way down to fiberglass...unless your modifying it? If you are just painting it again just sand it down to the base coat and repaint.

i have a 00-02 front bumper that i'm going to modify into something unique. it'll be a one of a kind for fun.
i just wanted all the paint off and i've already started cutting off where i don't need it.
i'm going to extend here, cut there, and so on. don't know if i'll use the thing but someone might want to. i love my Z24 front!

You're going to modify something yet you didn't know what to use to get paint off? What grit are you using to remove the paint?

but yourself a nice d/a. got me a d/a, 30gal compressor, and nice 3m respirator works great. 80grit dont take long. then 220 to smooth er out nicely sumtimes, hell 80 is decently smooth..

but the only way i know of is sanding. d/a sanding is a helluvalot easier and quicker..

Yeah... but a d/a if you don't know what you're doing can be a not-so-good idea... you can cut through the fiberglass wayyyyy too fast.

especially on flat surfaces like the front face of the bumper, its tough not to get waves in the piece with a DA. id personally use a long block as much as i could and take as long of strokes as you can. i try and use a block on ANY piece i sand. some obviously have crazy curves where the block becomes useless, but waves suck!
