how to get a car ready for primer?

Hello Everyone,

I have a 96 cavalier and it has some rust on it, I was wondering how do I start to get my car ready for primer? What sandpaper do I start with when I first start, Also which tools would I need? using your hands for the sandpaper gets annoying after about 2 hours of sanding. Thank You Everyone!

well for starters, i would NOT sand a car by hand. your bound to get wavy spots. use a block.

secondly, if there is rust on the car, sanding and primer isnt going to hide it. the rust will need to be fixed before you do anything. and depending where the rust, you may need to have a new panel welded in

rust is not something for a novice to work on... if it's not fixed right, it'll come back and get worse. Just let a shop fix it and fix it right, normally they'll guarantee their work

If the rust hasn't gone through the metal, then osfo should take care of it and body filler should take care of any low spots resulting from removing the rust.

No... that will not fix the rust. If the rust has left divets or low spots in the metal... the metal needs replaced period because it's too far into the metal to be stopped... it'll end up only being a temporary fix, it'll show again and get worse.

minor surface rust USUALLY can be taken care of by sanding/grinding it off, treating the metal, etc... but if you don't know what you're doing there's no guarantee.

ive gotten by with sandblasting the area and filling it if it hasnt gone through the metal..if it has tho at any point you have to cut out the panel and weld a new one in..
