[pic request] Wings West Sunfire Rear Lip
Sunday, July 22, 2007 11:23 AM
Searched every post that had either "rear lip" or "wings west" in the title... stock photos are no help. Registry has good pics of the front, but no rear

Anyone have a clear pic of the rear lip?

Would look good without the bulky part in the middle.

I have one on my 1998 Sunfire convertible. I'll take a picture tonight and see if I can upload it here tomorrow.

Not liking the WW rear lip. Ginostyle had it on his Fire. It looks tough to fit your exhaust on, as it would have to sit lower then the lip.

If it's installed properly (which can be a little tricky, given its design it can "sit" at a range on angles given the curve of the side of the stock rear bumper) it does fit with the stock exhaust, which faces the left side opening of the lip.

However, since the stock exhaust is inside the lip it can result in some heat-related paint scorching of the bottom section of the lip. That's why I changed my exhaust to a single oval port version, which exits outside the lip (fitting it required some modification of the left side opening of the lip, you'll see that in the pictures I'll be positng).

I do like the WW rear lip because its uncommon and unlike most aftermarket Sunfire full bumpers is stylishly "restrained;" it doesn't "over-bulk" the rear of the both car like the latter often do.

O.K., this picture certainly isn't perfect (had to take it tonight after it got dark, so the lighting stinks) but this will give you a general idea. If I can get home at a decent time tomorrow, I'll try to get a better daylight shot.

If you could get a full on rear shot, that would be great. I'd like to do a photoshop w/out the center drop down piece just to see what it would look like...

How much lower does the center upper sit from the stock bumper?

mikey: that doesnt look bad at all. do you have the full kit? thats the only kit i would put on my fire drop top (green also ) and i love the front. if you have any other pics of the rest of the car it would be nice to see.

The front is bulkier than I thought, but the rear gives the bumper an import fighter-esque look from the side. I'd like to see more photos, too!

When I first modded the exterior three years ago, I had the WW front and rear and import fighter sides. My front looked just like that of the yellow car in the prior post.

I subsequently damaged the WW font lip, so currently my front is stock (still have the IF sides and WW rear). I actually have a replacement WW front lip in hand, but for a number of reasons have procrastinated and still haven't finished/installed it (the whole "maybe it's time for a change" mindset). Per another thread on this board, I'm now considering completely replacing tthe front with an RK knockoff (pic below). The biggest issue with it is figuring out turn signals (which, where and how - this car is driven daily so I'd have to install something). Any recommendations on the latter issue would be much appreciated!!!

I'll post more pics of the car tonight.

the RK knockoff has a spot for turns, as well as a center piece (it kind of looks like a 95-99 GT bumper) -- Pic below

the one in your pic has been modified slightly

Jayfire, I can't find any new pics... last post from that member was 2k4

kardain: the pic of the red sunfire with the knockoff kit is how they come. i think soundspeed makes them and they dont have the middle piece for the center vents nor places on the sides for turn sigs.

mikey: yeah ive seen the front pieces on fires before...just never a vert. i thought it would be nice to see the lip on a car with the top down, thats all. and personally, i love the original rk bumper w/cunards so if you are going to switch from the WW lip to anything, i definitely say go with that bumper.

and if you are looking for places to put your turn sigs...ive seen some people attach them to the bottom part of the top of the bumper (near the top-outsides of the grill). im not sure how the fire ones will line up, but ive seen people go to autozone and pick up clear turn sigs from an integra and use them on drift kits, etc. that might be a place to start looking.

That's correct - the picture of the red RK "knockoff" I posted is directly from the Soundspeed website. The cadomain pic kardian posted is either a very, very heavily modified version of that or more likely (given the way the middle looks) an OEM GT bumber that has had a huge amount of work done on it, including adding RK style cunards. Whatever, again it's not the RK knockoff version I posted that Soundspeed is currenly selling and that I am considering.

When you say "original RK Sunfire front," which version are you referring to? A or B below?

Version A

Version B

Given your mention of cundards I sense you are referring to version A. However, from what I can ascertain RK doesn't make that bumper anymore (they don't catalog it. although they do still catalog the cunards). So if that's what you're recommending, I assume I'd have to track a used one one down or if I'm real lucky a NOS one sitting in a shop or warehouse somewhere .

They are currently cataloging version B for $395, not including shipping. It looks similar to (but has a different catalog # and price) than the Streetfire one they also catalog.

I can pick up the Soundspeed knockoff (which is clearly aimed at being a clone of the RK version B) for a little over $200 shipped. I realize the real RK one is made of sturdier, thicker fiberglass and will fit perfectly while the knockoff is of thinner construction and will consequently need internal reinforcement and likely some fitment tweaking (not major re-work, tweaking) . I view that not so much as "you get what you pay for" as "to save money, you have to engage in a lot of additional prep and install work." So whether the $250 to $300 premium for the real thing is worth it basically boils down to how much I feel my time is worth!

Thanks for the integra tip - If I do go with either the real or knockoff RK front, the area the turn signals would go into on the side is relatively flat, so the curved OEM fires ones won't work .

Kardian - at lunch today I managed to go outside and get sharp, bright daylight shots of the WW rear. I'll post them tonight.

Actually, now that I've looked at it further, the bumper on the Sunfire in the Cardomain pic Kardian posted is the "version A" original RK bumper. You can tell by the lines on the center panel. It's hard to make out at first because the dark blue base color and angle of the photo obscures the grill areas.

As to whether that bumper actually came with built-in spaces for turn signals, I'm pretty sure they came with an inset on the side like the one in Kardian's cardomain photo, given a few other pics I could find on the registry showed them.:

That stated, I'm not sure the location of that space is street legal for a turn signal (it's not clear in the picture if those are signals or just relfectors). My read of DOT lighting regulatons (which are the basis for the auto laws in just about every state) seem to clearly state that a front turn signal has to be at or very close to the front corner. The insets in the photos above are much too far back from it.

You just looked WAY to into this.

Yes, there are turn signal slots, just like the stock bumpers have (I see you've come to this conclusion a few times).

The soundspeed bumper is hideous. You can still purchase the RK replacement front, just go to Gravana's website.

Mikey, all 3 (the one I posted as well as the 2 you posted) are the RKS front bumper... which is your version A. Verson B is the Streetfire front

there is a way to use clear turn signals rather than the yellow ones:

O.K., thanks, I stand corrected. The stock 96-00 Sunfire GT bumper (example below) does have turn signals like the RK bumper, so they must be street legal. And thanks for the tip on where to look for the clear versions and original RK bumper.

And now to respond to Kardian's original request, here are (for the first time EVER on jBody/org) clear, detailed pictures of the Wings West Sunfire rear lip:

MMMMM i LOVE it! is that manta green? and how does that lip attach? just tape or screws also?

Workable w/out the center section, based on where your exhaust tip is, should have enough clearance for a hitch receiver as well... I'll consider it now (that's just a quick chop for reference only)

thanks, those helped a bunch
