any particular reason? are you changing it in any way? if so, you might be better off using the stock bumper as a mold and making a fiberglass version that you can change. you CAN glass over the stocker, but you run a much bigger risk of it cracking, etc.
NO SIG FOR YOU!
not a good idea... plastics flex, fiberglass doesn't... won't hold up

agreed. if you plan on making a stock front out of glass to modify then the best bet is what ben said and use the stock as a mold.
good deal, just thought i'd ask. but i figured i'm gonna make a mold of the stock z anyway.
thanks everyone

im still curious what youve got in mind. care to share with the rest of the class? or is it top secret for now?

well, when i make a copy of the oem 99 z front bumper, i'm going to fiberglass the upper portion of the 00-02 bumper that i have(which is in fiberglass already), and then get a fiberglass 03-05 ls sport lip. fiberglass it all together and touch it up for paint. keep my 00 headlights and z24 bumper. plus, add a lip too

i would do some research on mold making.
ie. mold release agent, etc. if you just flat out glass right over it, you'll have one hell of a time pulling it off without destroying it.
have you checked out anything on that?
if i recall, hes got the mold release, hes got the tools...
at least i think thats what he told me lol
good deal.
it would suck to glass it all up and realise you'll never pull it apart, lol
yes it would. and I have the materials to do it. the wax and liquid to make molds. i just need more of it soon for the z bumper.
what i have now is only enough for a lip and couple pieces i am working on.

my attempt
it worked out pretty well..... tho it weighed a hell of a lot! I say just make a mold out of it and do it that way! Much lighter! I do have to say tho, it was one hell of a learning experience!
^^^you do realise that resin is not what gives fiberglass strength right? not quite sure why you would glass the bumper, then wrap it and not glass it.
Exactly! You've got to add actual fiber glass matting to it lol. You made a resin bumper.
Also, prepare to overheat.
I actually glassed it with two layers of mesh as well as the resin.
@!#$ dude, honestly, I had no idea of what I was doing!
were.....you......showering? with the bumper?
NO SIG FOR YOU!
I had just finished sanding all the paint off and drilling the holes thru it... I was living in an apartment at the time and didn't have access to a hose
So I threw it in the shower! While I was washing it, it was spraying water all over me and the floor so I said @!#$ it and jumped in too.

personally i believe that fiberglassing to the stock bumper isnt as 'risky' as ppl are telling others. when paul did his technic on his 95-99z bumper it was strong as hell and DID NOT crack whatsoever. he ran it on his daily driver for a few weeks IIRC and it was fine. he also told me he TRIED getting it to crack by hitting it with a dead blow hammer numerous times and it was still fine. i believe it wasn't until something heavy fell on it that it acctually broke.
i'll definatly get to see if its going to work or not this next summer. it would really blow to spend that money getting it nicely painted and then see cracks in it though...

its not that the fiberglass isnt strong enough, its the fact that plastic and fiberglass expand at different rates. so say you leave it sitting in direct sunlight for 6 hours and its 100 degrees out...they will expand differently, ultimately causing cracking/releasing.
now granted it can take 2 days to happen, or it can take 2 years to happen...theres no set timeline for when/why it would crack, but the ultimate conclusion is that it will crack.
done it myself. same holds true with metal and fiberglass. thats why you see widebody cars have panels that eventually lift away from the metal. also why alot of fabricators like to build all structure strictly out of sheet metal, so there are never any concerns on seperation
No, you cannot. If you do, I will come to your house in the middle of the night and kill you and your parents with a chainsaw.
