Welding is the proper way. If you fiberglass it and/or bondo it, it will crack and look like @!#$.

to add to this... you cannot fill the entire area in with filler or it will crack.

after welding your going to need to use a skim coat of filler just to get it perfectly smooth. but you sand most of it off so it wont be an issue.

In the end, we're all just chalk lines on the concrete.. drawn only to be washed away.

and to add to all the above...

to make sure you have a good finished product, once you have your skim coat of filler on (and it may take more than one depending on how clean/even you welds are)...block sand the trunk as opposed to using a DA or orbital. It will help make sure you get a nice even surface with no low spots or waves...remember, if you have any defect at all in the body work, the paint is going to amplify that ten-fold.

weld it up, just like every one said. im on my second shaved trunk and currently working on another. use tons of small tach welds to hold the plates in place at first with out warping the welding area. then use single passes between the tachs, to make seam welds. that will give you the most durability. most imp. of all TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!1!!1! its not a race. the smallest imprefection will ruin your trunk, use as little filler as possible. remember most sandable primer is buildable, and that can be utilized, just watch for heavy spots theyll crack

just some things to think about
