Hood Fabric on Underside

When I open my hood I have that fabric stuff and I want to remove it. What is the purpose of the fabric there and is it ok to take it off? The reason being is because it looks really ugly and I will be at a show this weekend and think it looks better off.

My Gt has it also it is there to help deaden the sound from the engine and to help keep the hood from getting as hot from the heat of the engine. The less expensive models do not have it. You can remove it for the show and put it back if you wanted after.

Well my wifes 2000 Cav never had the hood mat and the paint on her cars hood is perfect. But her car is bone stock. I run a supercharger and a ceramic header on my 2004 SF GT and It gets alot more heat coming off the header than the stock cast exhaust manifold. So short term I think it would be fine but long term the paint will start to go IMO.
