Do you ever wish?

That you could go back and delete some of your older posts?

You know... posts that, at the time seemed important to argue, or set the story straight, and now that you look back on it you feel stupid and immature? Like it wasn't even worth the trouble and it wasn't a big deal, and now you kind of just want to get rid of it?

Or maybe a post or two where you thought something ridiculously stupid, and you feel embarrassed for it to even exist on the internet.

I do.

I remember one post here where I believed for a short while that my car had "no" struts. None. Zip.

At the time I was sort of angry at the responses I was getting, not because I was wrong, but because I believed they were making fun of me for being so stupid. Now I realize that it would be quite a humorous idea to have my car sitting on just springs. I don't even know how I thought that would work...

I just thought it'd be funny to share, if anybody else has a ridiculous post like that, feel free to share

I've been searching the Archive and found some stuff..... to bad I spent a lot of time in the J-body Versus forum back then and can't post links because the forum doesn't exist anymore.

Some of the stranger things I've said..

Quote:

No sh!t......cross my heart... Although I think the guy might have been under the influence of halusinagenic mushrooms of some sort...

Quote:

Yea, people in Trucks or weird when it come to people in cars. I actually had a guy get out of his Dakota at a red light..walk up to my car and started talking sh!t..He then tried to grab me

Quote:

I've said it before and I'll say it again.....I"M AN IDIOT!!!!!!!

Quote:

Hey darkstars.... you still there......I'm gunna buy the stuff don't worry. I even brought home a huge piece of plywood home from work on my roof, so I'll have something to set the speakers on

Quote:

I'ts your car....if you like it thats all that matters...if anyone gives ya crap just tell them the same thing that Jesus says to averyone.............accept me or go to hell

I regret even asking this for obviouse reasons.

I remember mocking some guy for calling the PASSlock fuel password the "R-code"... when that's exactly what GM calls it... just one of the posts I wish I could take back.

I think this is a great thread.

Growing up has never been so well documented.

I regret lots of posts. One comes to mind for sure. I was lucky I was set straight by PM.

Humility is good for the soul.

what i think will be very interesting is if/when we read these posts YEARS from now. since nothing on the internet really dies (or very rarely) the possibility of our posts living longer lives than us is very real.

imagine this scenario happening in the next 20-30 years: a politician is running for office....maybe even the presidency. so in an effort by his opponents to dig up dirt on him, they root through all of the archived posts they can find online and find some immature comments that he posted when he was 19 on a car forum. this causes a @!#$ storm and his candidacy is sunk because of it.

or imagine one of our sons or daughters doing the same type of thing and seeing all of the @!#$ that we posted back in the day. how would we explain away the things that weve posted over the years? ive posted in a few threads that i am not really looking forward to having kids. if i had a kid and they were to read that, how would that make them feel? would they look at me differently after reading time and again that my 20-something self hated the idea of being a father?

as much as i hate to bastardize this quote, it seems to be poignant: what we do online echoes in eternity. remember that folks because it might come back to haunt you in the years to come.

if i ever run for office, everything that i have posted in AG will sink my career before it ever starts

that probably goes for lots of people who post in AG

(tabs), I like that you brought that fact up, but I think you're overreaching a slight bit. Many people who run/are in political office already have things that they've done when they were younger that are indisputably true that could have affected their running. I think (I'm probably wrong here) that most people are smart enough to realize that everybody's been in their "young and stupid" phase of life, and people grow up, mature, and better themselves.

People aren't perfect, they're people.

Also, I think if your kid was smart enough to find your old posts referencing that, that they'd be smart enough to understand you've done some changing as well. Not growing up per se, because many adults still don't want kids. I don't know of a single person that has said they regret having children, maybe they wished it would have happened later, but not that they didn't want them..

Then again, people can lie fairly easily, but why lie to me? I don't give a @!#$ if you hate your kids

ron: i dont think im overreacting. our generation is experiencing a level of scrutiny and recording that was unheard of just 25 years ago. this will inevitably lead to new problems down the road....ones that we might not be able to fathom at this time. with this constant recording, its just waiting to bite someone in the ass.

before, if you called someone a wop, a kike, or a nigger, the chances of that being recorded were slim to none. now, it just sits on someone's server, collecting digital dust until an enterprising person decides to look it up.

before, if you went to a seedy movie theater to watch hardcore porn, no one would remember you. now, your ip address has been logged and your credit card processed, making it impossible to deny.

before, if you smoked pot or drove drunk, your kids would have no way of finding out unless you told them specifically. now, if youve been dumb enough to mention it in a post on some forum, then its there for them to search for. and if you dont think your kid will google your name one day, then youre just kidding yourself.

now i can see why you might think these are far reaching theories, but what im saying is that all of this stuff is here for anyone to find, for whatever reason they may have. businesses are already looking at prospective employee's personal myspace and facebook pages.....do you really think its that far of a jump from that to including vanity searches on google as part of a background check?

we are entering a new era and we wont realize the full spectrum of problems and how to avoid them until its too late for us.

Re: Do you ever wish?

Ben....not all of us having the internet snooping ability you do (you scare me)

I do see your point, and have even seen potential employers try to find potential employees my space pages and such.....but I don't think an old forum post could be used against you. Perhaps your account got hacked, or something along those lines. Just email Dave and tell him to delete all your posts when you run for office (Tabs 4 prez)...and since when do you have to pay for porn online??!!

Obviously if you really misuse the magical powers of the interweb, thinking no one else can see what you are doing...you are sadly mistaken, and THAT can bite you. If you are putting up no0dz of yourself on Myspace, thinking that no one thats not your "friend" will ever see them....you are in for a suprise...

I highly doubt it will elevate to the point you are talking about IN OUR LIFETIME at least....except for extreme cases...like running for president. As far as the kids go....at least you know the J-body is a dead platform....by the time they will be into modding cars the J's will be a memory, and old turds waiting in line for the crusher (with some exceptions of course).

Basically if you somewhat behave yourself online, you don't have a problem. As far as I know everyone looks at porn, and everyone has done SOMETHING stupid in thier lives. It is just recorded better now. I believe that if something like this were used against you for a job opportunity, it would be considered a violation of multiple rights, including the freedom of speech. Bottom line....don't be a dumb a$$, and you have nothing to worry about. I dont think what you post in AG could ever be brought up since it is a premium membership only type affair.

Who knows though. Maybe we will all be thrown in jail in a couple years...

Everyone I go into business with gets a general search. Google alone protected me from a pathetic scammer. I wonder if he knew his name would bring up the first three hits all relating to his scamming.

If you can't stomach what you say on the internet...

I'm on here drunk and could still give 2 @!#$s when I'm sober about what I said. The point is at one time I said it and meant it, on the hereafter you just have to live up to it.
