"NOISY MUFFLER" fix-it ticket, help me o
Monday, April 10, 2006 2:30 PM
Just got my second "fix it" ticket for my exhaust, after fighting and winning one last year. I give up, the exhaust is always a great excuse to pull someone over and check them out for other possible issues, and I realize that. However I don't think I can win the second time around.

Currently I'm running a full exhaust, 27" glasspack, and a Magnaflow Wide Open Series muffler, smaller than stock.

Magnaflow doesn't make anything quiet enough for what I'm looking, so I called up Flowmaster and he recommended the 60 series shown here but really couldn't make me any promises.

Any input on quieting down my exhaust is appreciated, I really and hesitant to go with a stock muffler, yet I need this ticket signed off at the same time.

Almost thinking stock w/electronic cut-out, but that's the most expensive route as of now.

Also anyone curious, MI goes by a decibel reading, however no department has such equipment to prove I'm either above or below it...fun. Though I am checking it out tonight, people who run the car show have one for "loudest exhaust" comp, but using these readings in court is debateable.

Find me a loophole in the MI exhaust law!

See, this is what I don't understand. And in no means do I mean to jack this or anything.

BUT...my dad has an 04 Vette with a full exhaust and that thing is loud as can be.

What I'm not understanding is how can our exhausts, even with long resonators, still be loud?

Either it is really loud or the cops are being dicks.

Sorry, that is my little rant.

They have a decibel ordinance, yet no way to test. There's one loop hole right there. The burden of proof is on the issuing officer and/or agency. They have to prove you're breaking the law, not the other way around. The "innocent until proven guilty" works in traffic court, too. And if they don't have a dB meter to test your compliance, they can't prove you're in the wrong. Secondly, you have a muffler, right? Is it defective? Is it DOT legal? Better yet, is it manufactured specifically "For off-road use only"? If they can't prove that muffler shouldn't be on any car driven on public roads, they got nothing. Trust me, I've spent the last few years trying to get into the ILEA (Police Academy in Iowa), so I've done ride alongs and reserve duty and I'm a Criminal Justice major. I study law as a requirement and if I've accomplished anything so far, I've figured out loopholes for pretty much any traffic ticket out there.

How big is your muffler? You could add a bigger muffler (longer, taller) or another res(if you can fit one.

But a oem style muffler would quiet it down. Try a muffler with chambers instead of straight through such as a dynomax muffler.

But seing as in you already have a 27" res, I say your cop and/or laws are just strict. I only have a 14" muffler, 14" res with a header and hi-flow cat and no cops give me a hrad time.

i got pulled over in Marquette (the UP) for my exhaust being too loud, i told the officer it was street legal, and he just gave me a warning. he didn't have anything to test it with.

i guess i just got lucky or something, because i doubt i could pass the decible test. i have an RK 4-2-1 header, 2.25" pipe, high flow cat, and 2 magnaflows.

Well it didn't help she followed me up a hill with a stop sign at the top, with a load on it the exhaust tends to be a little throaty...and well louder.

I honestly appreciate your advice, gives me a lot to prepare and think about.

I see a lot of people recommending Dynomax. Another issue I'm running a "test pipe" so to speak.

So to speak? You're either running a cat or you're not. But if you're not, don't even try to fight that ticket. They'll check everything if you do and if you're caught without a cat that's even more fines. I can't get you out of that one, bro.

Re:

but a cat on it , and use a muffler with a case length atleast 18"

you can put a muffler bypass just in front of the muffler so that its easy to get to so you can pull it off for track use

Re:

What are you running Eric?

Re:

Joe, I sent you a response to your PM. Get a cat on before you go to appeal the ticket if you can. If I had to guess that's your biggest problem. A hi-flo cat will be louder than stock, and no cat is even louder. With a hi-flow cat and that resonator, you should be able to run that muffler and still comply with dB ordinance, but I'm guessing. Hell, I'm running an old HKS Dragger I got off a Sylvia cat-back, stock cat, no resonator, and my car still manages to comply with local noise ordinances. Get the cat on and see what happens.

All shall be ordered tomorrow.

Search in this forum, for a post by Mr. Goodwrench...it's got info on the Quiet Flow muffler by Walker...supposed to be quiet, but gives performance as well...It's what I'm looking at if/when I put an exhaust on the 03.

Just found that, thanks bro for looking out. Gonna try to order one tomorrow.

if its the same exhaust you had on from the last ticket, use that in court........ its like when they site other cases during trials.... if already found innocent on that charge for the same exhaust, it should be easy to get off again.

In Wisconsin, modifying your exhaust to be louder then stock is illegal..... and removing a GOOD cat is illegal, even if you are replacing it with a NEW cat........ but once its gone, how can they prove it was good

dont mean to thread jack but....

ln2jhonny, i got a legal question.

im in ontario canada, btw.

i got puled over for an unsafe lane change.some one infront of me and beside me (2 lane road), light turned green, i steped on it, as soon as i was out of the intersection i changed lanes. i signalled. now im doing about 70 or so in the 60 km/h zone, a 70km/h is comming up in about .25 km.

i see bright lights behind me (the cop, but no cherries on yet) so i get back over to the right lane, i signaled. i thought it was the slightly tunned civic that was beside me at the lights, so i moved over to the right lane, but the bright lights followed me. then came on the cherries.

gave an excuse that my throtle was stuck, that i had the intake off and was cleaning it that day. anywasy, he was a supervisor and said he couldnt write the ticket, so they called in another cruiser.

i used a company to fight a speeding ticket once, so i called them up again. they said they could win the ticket as soon as i told him that they had to call another officer and that the one that pulled me over didnt write the ticket.

any loop holes? is there something that says the officer that pulls me over has to write the ticket, or do you know what type of defense the guy im hiring may use?

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!
Re:

ive got the magnaflow high flow cat , and the rk magnaflow which has a 14" muffler

it is a 2 1/4" inlet and 2 3/4" outlet , which doesnt help with the noise

Ok, legally your off the hook no questions asked. WHY???

Ask the judge for a motion to dismiss, cite that there is no evidence to your violation of the noise ordinance, and that you have proof of a previous charge, where the judge found you not guilty.

It works, i'm going on my 15th illegal tint ticket, the judge knows me by name now. When she sees me, she says, "let me guess, motion to dismiss". I say, "yes mam". She says, "Granted, see you in a week".

Its even become a little joke at the court house. Its gotten to the point that i think if they were to actually meter my tint it wouldn't make it past arraignment.

But don't forget to bring copies of the previous case with you, so your judge can see it.
Re:exhaust

Well my exhaust will be made by two 4" round Dynomax Bullet mufflers 16" long and a Magnaflow not polished #11256 4"x9"x18" 2 1/2" O/C as a rear muffler. Dynomax mufflers are excelent but tends to get louder over time. Also are heavier the Magna's.

You may ask why two resonators and not one long, because we will tune up the exhaust sound trying to locate the resonator or reverb points in the straightest zone of the exhaust near the future header. This is some kind of antique art. I have seen old people making headers by doing a line with a pencil in the OEM manifold and tubing exhaust to locate where the graphite burns up, so that will be the resonance points with higher temps. If you ask me sound like a false reading, but I have seen it and it works quite good.

Anyway I will post a video when we made it. I hope it sounds good, mellow and low freq, no more than 90dB at WOT.

Another solution could be a Turbo XL or ProXs from Borla but are pricey from my point of view. ProXs from Borla are well know to have excelent flow characteristics and less sound at 14" long than other brands of the same size.

Dynomax Super Turbo is well know that is the quietest performance muffler but is flows 50% less than straight through ones.

The last trick could be using some kind of exotic mufflers like Remus (I had one of those in my last car and the performance and sound are amazing but doesn't last much), Trickflow, Ansa, Supersprint, Devil (are well know around Group A in Europe in rallies, are from France), etc..... Many of this exhaust systems that are approved for Europe needs to be quietest than American ones by special aftermarket product transportation laws.

That are only some ideas.

Regards,
