engine performance

I see a lot of mods that people can do to an ecotec engine but i don't really see a whole lot for the 2200 engine. Please would anybody give me a couple ideas for mods on a 2200 engine and also where i can find them? thanks! btw...i have an 02 sunfire with the 2200 engine.

Not worth the time, effort, or money...IMO

You can do exhaust, intake, cheap stuff like that.

Gravana Tuning
Turbo Tech Racing

Yea, ive been working on mine for a bit now, got most of the blot ons covered. they make exhausts, intakes, ignition components, but and i wish i knew this before i started my project, the head is the most restrictive part of the engine. If you've got a nest egg of like around a grand, save up a lil more and do a 2.4 swap. A Port and polished head for the 2200 is like 800 and if im correct, an egine swap could be done for like 1400 so... If you want some more in depth info about the 2200 gimme a personal message. or email, there are lots of guys still working on making the 2200 and 2.2 work as performance monster. Madjack and Scarab are both good guys with that.

Still not worth it. With all the money you dump into that engine, you could have had an Eco and you'd be WAY better off.

In addition...Phlatcav just did the Eco swap. You can talk to him for more details.

Where did you get that quote from? I know a guy right downtown from me that said he would do my heads (4 cyl/8 valves) for less than 250.

I disagree with the swap. Since you already have a motor it isnt worth it.

A swap would benefit greater than mods.

I thought the 95 2.3L Quad4 was rated at 150bhp stock, not 160.

you cant trust just anyone on doing a P&P job ... it comes down to you get what you pay for .. buy thats my opinion.. i guy at a speed shop did my friends 89 5.0 for 300 bucks some old timers did my heads for 750 on my 5.0 as well guess who got better performance ? P&P does not just consist on just making the ports bigger it depends on how the air flows. but my .2

those hp charts are mostly only a crank remember! you can have an auto 2200 and only see about mid to high 90s with a few bolt ons. I know from experience! mine has 96 i think the last dyno was. thats with a cai and an exhaust. a friend of mine has a manual 2200 same year and he gets around 110 so it also depends on trany type. just to clear that up.

And also that 120 HP is a little generous I hear. I have heard of people seeing 90HP at the wheels stock.

Dude, I'm all for building the 2200 (I've got multiple LN2 builds going on right now myself), but you're not going to see any gains from bolt-ons. Invest $1000 in a CNC'ed head from JTuners/patriotperformance, a Crane regrind on your cam, and a decent full exhaust. That's probably less than what it would cost for a swap, and you'll have very similar power (depending on the cam). If you have a little more, start doing some research on boosting options and put a turbo system together (can be done efficiently for $1500 easily). This will net you up to 300hp (crank) on an internally stock motor if you want it.
For more info on upgrading your 2200's internals, search through the wealth of recent threads full of info provided by the LN2 wizzes slowolej and MadJack.

For the most part power comes from cylinder head design, greater air in/air out is what you want. You're options are bigger valves, rocker arms, higher lift cams, and port and polish for a NA engine. Bolt ons will only help so much until you address the head. Comparable power can made with the 2200 for less than an ecotec swap, but in the end the ecotec will be capable of a higher horesepower peak. I guess it depends on your goals and money you wanna drop trying to make a slow car fast. I have a 2200 and its fine for, but if I want a fast car I'll sell it and buy something other than an economy car.

i got quoted for a P&P 500 for the best one here n like 100 for oversized valves which would help out a lot. i have a 2200 and im planning on having turbo by the end of summer if i ge tthe hour promised to me at work. our motor wont be much of an N/A thing but get an extra motor and biuld it up right you'll have a pretty fast car.

I f you can find an Eco for cheap somewher you will be better off doing the swap.. If you have all the wiring and ECU its pretty much plug and Play.. you can Hit PhlatCav up if you have any more ?'s he recently done the Eco swap..And there are a Couple more that have done it as well. But can't think of there user names Right off hand..
