96 2.2 cylinder head
Monday, May 14, 2007 7:17 AM
Hey yall, what ive got is a 96 sunfire with the 2.2 and im currently working on an all motor 2.2 build. right now im focusing on the cylinder head. ive got a good friend and ihra racer sandy wilkins who is doing my machine work for me. my main question is what can i do to improve this cylinder head? i know the factory rockers just bolt down and i wanted to run a set of the crane rockers. do i have to put screw in studs and guide plates in there to replace what the factory has? also i noticed the intake ports are perfectly matched to the gasket size but the exhaust ports can be cleaned up a little. also is there any polishing i can do to the bowls? and lastly do they make a bigger set of valves and matching springs for this head? ideas and part numbers for the parts would be appriciated thanks guys!

You can get oversized stainless valves from carcustoms.net
During port work, make sure to pay attention to the valve guide and valve seat insert. These were cheap motors, and you'll get your biggest gains from the bowl area.
Look up the rocker thread by MadJack to find everything you need for a roller rocker conversion.
For springs, look up the Comp Cams 105# LS1 springs. Have your machinist take your seats and guides down .090" to get a 1.800" installed height. Your stock retainers will work with these.

Josh, Last year Comp released a new Beehive Spring with an installed hight of 1.700". The part number is 26981-16 (see the second page for specs.) If the top of the spring fits, we could very well have a new spring for the 2.2L OHVs. The 2200s could use them if they machine the seat 0.100". Here's the link to them from Summit Racing.

Oh, BTW, Where'd you get the "3SPEED" smiley?

Good find. Unfortunately, it won't clear the 2.2L valve stem seal (spring lower ID). It will clear the 2200 however, so this is definately their best option so far. I'll have to look through the rest of those at work.
Here are the measurements for the LN2s:

Either way you go you'll have to get some machine work done. Either machine the guide bosses and use the 2200s valve stem seals , or machine the seats down .090" to fit the LS springs. I'm seriously looking to do one or the other. It would cost less than getting the custom valves to fit the K-Motion springs and retainers (lock groove moved down .030"), the Manley locks and the seats for the oversized valves(might as well, since needing custom lock grooves) as it would cost just to get the +1mm valves and one of these sets of springs. As fpr the HP difference between the bigger valves and the +1mm valves is only a few ponies.

All that work to find a spring, lock and retainer set, just to change up to something else! Oh well, thats the way things go when paving new ground on a "odd ball" motor!

I had a feeling you would be changing it up. I think I'm sticking to my Comp 26915 springs though for any 2.2L head build that may be in the future. 130# isn't that bad.
