Exhaust System

I need some help on getting a Exhaust system for my Cavalier.

I have a 1996 Cavalier 2.2L 4DR. I want to get a really nice, deep racing sound out of my car when accelerating. I want to be able to hear a gradual roar from the start of accelration till I hit the high rpms and the car shifts. I dont want to loud of a sound, just a nice roar that others can hear as I drive by.

I am guessing this is going to take a Catback exaust system to do this. I have found this exhaust system so far: www.performancepartz.com --- Pace Setter.

Is this a good system or is there one cheaper or in the same price range that will give me better performance.

I have a budget of around $200 for the exhaust because it will cost about $100 to get it put on.

If you could please let me know what I need to get for this deep sound and some links to the products if possibal, Thanks.

it will do you much better to buy yourself a can-style muffler at the local speed shop (every town has one by now) or even Advance Auto or Autozone, then call your local muffler/exhaust shops to see which ones do mandrel or even compression (not crush) bends... they should charge in the vicinity of $150 for the piping and the installation. If you buy a $100 muffler, thats still only $250 total... a $50 savings! The key is to find a decent shop that will not do "crush" bends...

Just a muffler could get you the sound you want, but no performance gains......I have no experience with pacesetter exhaust hopefully someone else here does but as far as I have heard they are @!#$.......

my advice would be to ask some local shops how much they would charge to make you a custom exhuast and then just choose your muffler......

as for the muffler choice its hard for me to say " well you will like this one" as muffler/exhaust sound is subjective but I have a DynoMax muffler, fairly cheap and I like it. I have also heard good things about magnaflow............and finally, there is no rush, find out how much it will cost you to get a basic custom one made which will be a lot cheaper then any company that makes for our cars and save up, shouldnt have to get much more then you have now, if you go cheap it could cause more headach/money n the future....

So to get the sound I want a Muffler and Tip would work? Im not really looking for that muhc performence gain. I dont think the gain would be that noticable anyways.

If I can buy just a muffler and tip to give it a good look and sound I will just do that.

The Advanced Auto here has a muffler for $60.... not sure if it was a muffler and a tip or just one. It has a small & short piping on one end, a larger section, then a angled cut piping for the end.

As far as the pacesetter cat-back system, it's been talked about alot in the past:

I would first try and find a shop close to you that does compression or mendral bends to see if they can make you a custom one for a cheap price and you can pick out your muffler, and resonator. Tell them you want a 2 1/4" diameter exhaust system. If this doesn't work out, go Magnaflow or Thermal.

If you have anymore questions, just ask.

If performance is not on your list of priorities, then a muffler alone should yield the sound you described. I had just a muffler on stock piping for a while and I loved it. It was a very small fart-can muffler so it was definitely loud, but still deep. Then again, at that time I didn't care about how loud it was, so it worked out well. Look into a muffler with a fairly large/long body to help the deeper tones as well as keep the volume in check. Just from what I've heard in person, the round-body mufflers seem a little tinny/raspy and definitely louder compared to the oval-shaped ones with overall larger/longer bodies.

Please don't get the Pacesetter system unless you are immediately ready to swap out that crappy muffler it comes with for a nice one and also weld in a 25" glasspack/resonator. That's what I had to do. Sounds horrible the way it comes, and I'm confident saying that it's not at all what you're looking for, but the performance is fairly nice. Not a bad choice as long as you get rid of that damned muffler.

Refer to this link to get a good idea of what mufflers make close to the sound you want.

There are many options. Some that I like for their deepness are the Borla Pro XS, Borla Boomer, Magnaflow SS Street Series, and the Magnaflow SS Universal. Borla's a bit expensive at times, but I still like them more. I'm a Borla guy by nature, so I'm a little biased anyway.

Hope this all helped!

I wouldn't use the PS catback either and I also would do just a muffler. Even if performance isn't your main thing right now, it may be later. Also if you do a catback with bigger pipe and/or a resonator, is going to sound better than any muffler only install. Go to a local shop and tell them you need a quote for a 2.25" catback and you will supply the muffler of your choice. If you want it to be deep and not real loud you need to go with a oval style muffler not a fart can.

I found a place near here called Klien Mufflers that will install a Catback sys for $200 with my choice of a tip. I did not ask them for piping size or what kind of muffler it has. I will find out how much it would be if I supplyed my own muffler and how much piping variation I can get.

A friend of mine got his from there and he has a '97 Camaro and it sounds nice. His is Dual Exit

Will update when I find out some more.... Thanks for the responses !

Sounds like a decent price. 2-1/4" or even 2-1/2" piping will work, but you should shoot for 2-1/4". Pick up the glasspack from summitracing.com, pick up a muffler you like, and tell them you want those put on, and all they have to supply is the pipe. If their $200 quote was for everything, then of course it'll be less.

They said that they have a choice of mufflers to choose from that have tips already on them. The most common one used he said was a "Canster" or "Bumble Bee" or "Fast & The Furious" as some like to call it.

I might just take a ride to Gulfport and see what they have before ordeing anything... thanks for all the help! Great community.
