As most of you know there is the Roller Rocker arm conversions for the 2.2 and 2200 motors. Most every one is always talking about the Crane Gold Race Rocker Arms or the Comp Cams Magnum Roller Tip Rocker Arms.

What many on this web don't relize is there are actually many other option for rocker arms, all stemming from various models of the Small Block Chevy V8! Some of the V8 kits can be less costly than buying the various kits for our 4 cylinder motors.

Here is a listing, by manufacterer, of rockers that fit our motors, compiled from the Summit Racing and Jeg's catalogs and how much they cost. Please remember these will need the studs and sets of 16 can do two motors(split them with some one)

Crane Cams:

The Gold Race Roller Rockers are the "Gold Standard"of rocker arms. They are CNC machined from high quality and strength extruded aluminum and come with poly-locks. You pay for the quality you get here!
10750-16 1.5 ratio Gold Race Rockers a narrow biodied rocker, that can be used with the 2.2 with guide plates. They use a 3/8" stud. $320 for a set of 16.
10759-16 same as above, except in 1.6 ratio, same price.
10751-16 1.5 ratio Gold Race Rocker for use on the 2200s or the 2.2 w/o guide plates, self guided, narrow body rocker. Use 3/8" studs, $320 for 16.
10758-16 same as the 10751-16s but in 1.6 ratio.

Comp Cams

The Magnum Roller Tip Rockers are made of ultra strong chrome-moly steel. They don't flex, unlike stock stamped steel rockers do and the are "ratio accurate". They do still have the pivot ball fulcrum, which produces friction and heat.
1413-12 The 60 deg.V6 rockersin 1.52 ratio. Use on the 2.2 w/ the 60deg V6 rocker arm studs(10mm)$113 for a set of 12(buy 2 sets and split them 3 ways)
1414-12 same as 1413-12, except in 1.6 ratio and is $136 for 12.
1412-16 1.52 ratio, 3/8" stud for 2.2, $143 for 16.
1417-16 1.52 ratio for 2200(self-guided), $190 for 16.
1416-16 1.6 ratio for 2.2, $145 for 16.
1418-16 1.6ratio for 2200(self-guided), $190 for 16.

The Pro-Magnums are the same as the Magnums, except the have a roller fulcrum. Once again you get the quality you pay for here.
1301-16 1.52 ratio, 3/8" stud for the 2.2, $260 for 16.
1302-16 1.6 ratio, 3/8" stud for the2.2, $260 for 16.
1317-16 1.52 ratio, 3/8" stud, self-guided, for the 2200, $325 for 16.
1318-16 1.6 ratio, 3/8" stud, self-guided, for the 2200, $325 for 16.


ProForm

Made from billet aluminum. From what I've heard, they are decent quality for their price. Should have no problems holding up to what most will use them for, i.e. all but maximum effort race motors with mechanical roller cam.The only ones they have listed that fit are for the 2200/2.2 w/o guide plates.
66914 1.5 ratio, self-guided, 3/8" stud, $177 for 16.
66915 1.6 ratio, self-guided, 3/8" stud, $190 for 16.


Trick Flow

Heat trated, CNC Machined. Releif machined into it for additional valve spring clearance. Only one set, for the 2.2s.
31400514 1.5/1.6 ratio (8 of each) 3/8" stud, narrow bodied rockers, $308 for 8 ea 1.5 & 8 ea 1.6.


Summit Racing Equipment Brands

CNCed extruded aluminum, can handle upto 800 lbs, .800" lift and 1.550" dia springs. All these are the narrow bodied rockers that use 3/8" stud. All are sets of 16 and very reasonably priced.Come with poly-locks.
SUM-G6937-16 1.5 ratio for 2.2s, $206.88.
SUM-G6935-16 1.5 ratio, self guided for 2200s, $214.88.
SUM-G6938-16 1.6 ratio for 2.2s, $206.88.
SUM-G6936-16 1.6 ratio, self-guided for 2200s, $214.88.


JEG'S Brand

Extruded from 2024aluminum, 4130 steel trunion, roller axle and adjusting nut. Heat-treated 8620 steelroller tip and pushrod seats. Black anodized finish. Only available in self-guided, to fit the 2200s and 2.2s w/o guide plates in sets of 16.
555-20140 1.5 ratio, $229.99.
555-20145 1.6 ratio, $229.99.

There you go. Remeber that if you split a set of 16, you end up paying half the price!

To fiish up the hardware, you just need the studs, which I'll save for later. I have a little girl begging my attention.

my observations on these:

It doesn't look like the Proforms come with the polylocks, which would bring the proce up.

It looks like the Jegs rockers could be used with the full JBP valvetrain, or any other retainer/lock/valve combo you want to use...including lash caps

It's been my experience that most roller rocker sets come with the locks, it's just those that didn't state so, didn't have them listed in their description.

Okay, I checked the Proform site, and they DO come with locks, so these are definately the best for the buck as a Crane alternative (half the price lol).
Question: guide plates vs. self-aligning...what would you say are the benefits of each? which would you want on an engine turning serious RPM? Why not use both?

ARP Automotive Racing Products

Probably the most recognized name in fasteners and for a good reason. They just make a good product. These High Performance Series Rocker Arm Studs are made from8740 chrome moly forgings and heat treated to 180,000 psi. Not to be used with OEM style, self-locking nuts.

100-7201 M10 X 1.5 base, 3/8" X 24 top, used on the '97 & older 2.2s(Possibly some '98 models, Check before ordering) $45 for a set of 12
100-7221 Same as above, but in a two pack, $12.
134-7201 M8 X 1.25 base, 3/8" X 24 top, used on '98+ 2200s (some '98s may have M10 X 1.5 holes, check) $72 for 16.
134-7221 Same as above, but in a two pack, $13.
135-7201 / 7221 M10 X 1.5 base, 7/16" top, These are for really heavy duty work(i.e., Max Effort) if you can find a rocker that uses a 7/16" stud, that will fit under the valve cover. If your doing this, does the price really matter?


Crane Cams

Every bit as good as the "other" brand, but $$$.

99148-2 10mm-1.5 base, 3/8" top for 2.2, $26 for 2.
99154-2 8mm-1.25 base, 3/8" top for 2200, $23 for 2.

GM Parts

476530 This is the stock 60deg V6 rocker arm stud, most commonly used to convert the Comp Cams Magnum V6 rockers for use on the 2.2s. From GM Parts Direct, $2.24 ea, must buy in groups of 5 ($11.20).

Quite a few companies make various ratio rockers for the small block, such as 1.55, 1.65 or more, but unfortunitely, they wont fit our motors. Thing like 7/16" stud, wide bodied rockers, offset pushrods, etc.. make a VC spacer and or remove the oil baffling from the VC and you might get some to fit.

HotrodV6 was working on trying to get the aftermarket LS series rockers to fit, but it was a very difficult feat.

Proform for 2200 without guide plates: How do I know if I have guid plates. Exscuse my lack of rocker knowledge.

Thanks for the write up. I ordered my studs a while back ( 1 yr ) for my 2200 from crane and had my doubts on the summit rockers but now feel happy knowing some one wiith more knowledge and experiance has confirmed what i had in mind.

I am looking into the proform 1.6 also and i have the 2.2 OHV '96 engine. I think mine would have the guidplates then? Would i just take them off to install these?

AFAIK all 2.2L have guideplates and all 2200 are guideplate-less. Personally, I like the idea of guideplates, not sure why you wouldn't want them...except you should use heat-treated pushrods with them.
