Question that know one knows?
Tuesday, August 28, 2007 3:36 PM
I need to know this to fix the cav.I can order the two Grade 8 bolts from the dealer for $11 but can get some higher grade ones cheaper at a bolt supplier by my house, but they need the head size and length.JY by me pulls their motors so no luck there.Mostly I want to know this because no one seems to know. Thanks and here is a pic.And I posted this here because no one knew in the Maint. forum. It is for a 2.4

The dealer can actually tell you the size. I went to my local dealer and they gave me the sizes for a couple dozen different bolts I was replacing on my car (I was replacing some that were missing, and decided to get all allen head black oxide bolts to match).

I'm going to bet that those are 12mm 1.75 thread 40mm length, but I don't know 100%. Get the 12.9 grade (the metric high strength grade).

Called the dealer and they said they did not have the specs. in their computer(BS)I have had many here say 12mm,15mm head size and anywhere from 40mm,60mm and 100m in length.I will more than likely get them from the dealer but if someone here has the correct answer then I can get them cheaper.

The two different sizes your hearing (12mm and 15mm) are because the size of the shaft is 12mm, and the size of the head is 15mm. I would bet money on them being 12mm 1.75 thread. If you've already removed the part that's left, take it to the hardware store and match it. For the length, I seriously doubt it will be 100mm. It doesn't need that kind of depth. That's almost 4". It could be 60mm, though. If the bolt goes right through the bottom piece where it threads into, I'd go with the 60mm, as long as there is nothing to worry about it running into. Looking at the picture again, I would actually say there's a good chance they are 60mm, because the top part of the mount is pretty thick.

The other thing is that you can always get one bolt of low grade and see how it fits. A standard strength 12mm, 1.75, 40-60mm bolt will run you less than a dollar. If that fits properly, then get the high strength.
If your local dealer is BS'ing you, just tell them you'll get your parts elsewhere. They have the info.

If all to bolts are the same size, you could just order one from the dealer, then take it to the hardware store and find the higher grade bolts that match it and use them. I've used the good old, "find a nut that fits both" method for matching the threads more times than I can count.

I think your correct,I do believe the head is 15mm,length is what I don't know but could always use the buy a few of each method. The bolts snapped while driving so what you see in the pics is what was left.I also believe that the bottom of the lower bracket is solid so the bolt does not thread all the way thru.I am kinda in a time crunch and am hittin' the junkyards today for a lower bracket. Thanks to all

Kardain came thru with the correct size,12mm x1.75 x 55mm,so we'll see if that works.

So in reality, that 60mm length may or may not have worked. If the 55mm just about bottoms out in the hole, the 60 would not have allowed you to tighten it down, and you'd end up with the same problem.

LOL. Yep, that will always work as well, but when you have an excellent source for bolts like I managed to find recently, you can get the exact size. I found a place up here that has everything. I have been able to get every single bolt on my V6 in black anodized allen head. I only found them when I was looking for the AC compressor bolts, and the dealer gave me the size, but no place had them that long. A guy at Home Depot actually told me about this place in Portland, and I've been getting my bolts from there since.
