I've been looking EVERYWHERE for some better sounding, direct fit, mufflers for my 96 Sunfire GT with duals obviously. Basically I want the same size and pipe offsets so I can just install them on the factory system and reweld the factory tips to the new mufflers. I want to get the dynomax super turbos, cause I had one on my 89 Olds 98, and it had a nice mellow deep sound that wasn't annoying on long trips, but when you stepped on it, you heard it. So I guess I am looking for one of two things..... Does anyone know the specs for the factory mufflers? OR Has anyone done something like this already?
I know factory tips are boring... but I prefer to look stock... and I'm pinching my coins
There will be no "direct fit" mufflers that are aftermarket that will suit your needs as our piping OD is 1 7/8" . Howover you could buy 2 Dynomax ST's and take it to a shop and they can make a collar to step up ur pipe from the stock size to the 2.25" ID of the ST's. You may also need an extension as the ST's and no doubt shorter then the HUGE stock muffler. So that collar you would need could be somewhere around 6" and that way the outlet of the muffler will be close to the rear of your bumper. You could then get another collar to step down the from the 2.25" outlet diameter to what diameter the stock tips are.
Hey scott.... yeah i saw his set up yesterday, nice job he did. i was debating on 2" or 2.25... at least 2.25 will leave me wide open for system upgrades later on. I was hoping to do this myself since my buddy has a MIG, and I can always buy pipe from parts source or something. I'll have to measure up the mufflers and see what i can find on the dynomax site.
well then go for it I say. If you can do the work yourself and have access to a welder and you can find/make yourself collars to step up and down to the proper pipe sizes then all the power to you man.
yeah.. i was just trying to take the guess work out of things. then again, if i had to, I could always add extra pipe and just get two of the same sized mufflers. I like what one guy did, used a camaro/firebird crossflow muffler and just ran two tail pipes from the muffler.. so thats an option as well
yes well if you are attempting to go the path of the camaro muffler style, Dave Dunsmoor has one (atleast I think he still has one) for sale. Check out the link here and if your interested, send him a PM. He is a good guy to deal with (I bought my catback exhaust off him from this same thread
