Tapping the girdle is the proper way, no chance of leaks and no chance of having your drain submerged in oil.
Any advise on how to go about tapping the girdle?
Pan off, the hole would go through the windage tray thing, but how to keep the metal out? Just clean it really good after I guess?

No,
There is a dimple in the block on the rear, just above the oil pan mating surface. About midway on the block.
Drop oil pan and then drill through the spot on the back. All the shavings should fall to the ground, but always check and make sure, clean the area, then tap it to use whatever fitting you want to use. Then put oil pan back on.
FU Tuning
Dipping the drill bit in heavy grease to grab the shavings never hurts either.

or blow compressed air into the hole while your drilling, then you have minuimal clean up in the pan and underneath, but do take the pan off
