I used Rustoleum Automotive primer, Krylon Fusion, and Krylon Triple clear. Three coats of each. I have had zero problems with chipping over the course of a year. I've dropped a door handle from a height of three feet onto concrete and it didn't even scratch.

If I had to do it all over again (which, I'm going to), I'd use automotive paint and add in a flex agent so I don't have to worry about my A-pillars while I bend them to take them out.

hey raptor i used similar products and put two coats of the triple clear stuff, and during the summer time it begins to become sticky. Hmm are there any other clear coats you guys recommend?

Both my friend and I don't have any problems with the clear becoming sticky in the summer. I live in Michigan and she lives in Texas.

What is the clearcoat on? Plastic, or vinyl? If it's on vinyl, it's going to get sticky. Period. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. That's one of the (very many) reasons why you don't paint vinyl.

i'm looking to do the center console/dash cluster trim in a exterior matching red on my car soon as it starts warming up here. has anyone tried sanding the texture on the stock unpainted piece down first? how far did you sand down? to smooth? or just enough to get primer to stick? if i can sand it down to smooth then paint i would hope to be able to mimic the exterior paint. and i think the only problem with that will be sunlight reflecting back in my face. Any opinions?

I used SEM Vinyl Prep and then SEM paint on mine...I would never use anything but that. It worked out awesome.
