Ford really won the 2005 sales race?
Monday, February 13, 2006 9:23 AM
Ford Motor Co. says its Ford brand really outsold Chevrolet in 2005. Ford will demand that Chevrolet stop advertising itself as America's top brand, a company official said.
But General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner responded Sunday that GM will stand by sales data that show Chevrolet won the 2005 sales crown.

R.L. Polk & Co. registration data received by Ford executives Saturday showed that Ford had 5,000 more registrations in 2005 than Chevrolet, Ford spokes-man Jim Cain said. Ford quickly whipped up a slide on the Polk data to include in its make meeting Sunday.

Chevrolet earlier reported sales of 2,651,124 vehicles in 2005. Ford's reported sales were 2,634,041. Chevrolet has been blanketing the airwaves with commercials touting it as America's top brand - a title it last claimed in 1986.

Ford intends to send GM a letter this week asking that Chevrolet change the ads, Cain said.
"The lesson here is to make sure that all the facts are in your favor before you make such a bold claim," he said. "Fair is fair."

According to Ford, Polk data show 2.630 million total Ford registrations in 2005 compared with 2.625 million for Chevrolet. Even when medium-duty trucks are exempted, Ford still had the most registrations, Cain said.

Polk registrations show the number of vehicles registered by retail and fleet customers. The earlier data released by the manufacturers reflect sales as reported by dealers.

A GM spokeswoman said sales data are the industry standard and that there are always discrepancies between sales and registration data. Wagoner said GM will stand by its claim based on sales data.
"All I know is the data we published and we all go by," Wagoner said. "That's been out a month or so. Our data is right. It's published, public data which has come out."

This is kind of like a contest of who has the smallest penis. In the end, everyone loses.

Winning this title means @!#$ when they don't come out with a profit.

AWE !! Poor Ford !! First they loose and say its not really a big deal even tho they scream it from ever mountain top when they win it. Now here they come saying the data GM is going by is all wrong that they actualy won. Seems it does in deed matter to them and that they are all butt hurt cause GM knocked them out of the top spot. Tough sh-t ! You lost go back and focus on this year. But don't go around saying so it doesn't matter and then going see see we actualy did beat GM ! It makes you look like a moron.

No they didn't... I'm a ford guy, and I think this is total bull@!#$. GM is going on sales numbers, ford is basing their claim off of vehicle registrations.

BTW... General Motors' Chevrolet division said it stands by its claim that it was the top selling brand in the U.S. in 2005, despite Ford's challenge to that assertion.
Ford is relying on data released by R.L. Polk & Co that showed its blue oval brand had more 2005 vehicle registrations than GM's Chevrolet brand. But GM says it does not rely on vehicle registrations for sales figures because there is often a time lag between when a vehicle is purchased and when it is registered at the secretary of state's office.

Chevrolet sold 2,651,125 vehicles for all of 2005, compared to the 2,634,041 sold in 2005 by the Ford brand, according to Autodata Corp. figures.
Standing by without comment is Toyota, which is closing the gap on both GM and Ford, particularly when bulk sales of vehicles to fleets are excluded.

It's funny because I just got a letter today from Ed Pepper, (chevrolet general manager) about ford making a shait fit about not having sold the most in 2005. Chevrolet had deliveries of new car vehicles, totaling 2,669,932(according to my letter) which is 21,118 deliveries over what Ford did. It also includes in the letter the common discrepancies between vehicle registrations and new vehicles delivered.Looks like Chevy pulled it off this time, and can continue with America's number 1 selling brand.

exactly... neither gm or ford realize that toyota is about to take the sales crown away from them if they dont get it together. once that happens, all gm and ford will have to fight about is who won second

That's because the media and consumer reports in so frickin biased against any kind of domestic vehicle. They bash GM and Ford any chance that they get, and praise anything that has a toyota, honda, or nissan badge. The import market has pulled a sheet over the eyes of the american truck and car buyers with thier imports last forever , that they are willing to pay the way overpriced sticker because they beleive that they are getting the best of the best, when really GM has them beat in every which angle, by offering more options for trucks and cars, and also having the top ranked plants in the country. Sure toyota has plants in the US that give people jobs, but int he end the money is getting shipped right back over seas. and then we wonder why the economy is in the @!#$ter. That is part of the reason.

just my .02, IMO

Ford REGISTERED more cars, not sold more. So they can stop whining about chevy changing their ads.

I bought my pontiac in DECEMBER, and the dealership took 2 months to register it.
I still BOUGHT it in December. Most registratrions don't count.

Anyway like said before, both companies need to realize this stuff dosnt matter since their profits blow.

Trust me GM knows Toyota is coming.... My dad is in meetings at least once a week discussing this... GM realizes its a reality.
