Actually, thats a Pontac SuperDuty Four. It's a race version of the Pontiac 2.5L "Iron Duke." It is a 2.2L destroked engine, with a 2 valve OHV confguration. 348HP is also kind of conservative for the HP rating. These same motors used to power the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series cars(@2650lbs) at Daytona to 165+ MPH, with a 2 bbl carb and a restrictor plate using 107 octane race gas.


No, thats an actual 2.2. Its sleeved to almost 3.0 (our rule limit around here) A regular cyl head wouldn't work, so thats a billet piece that Ed Pink put together many years ago - probably based off the SD pieces. Its got a billet Scat crank and the block is drilled for 4 bolt caps. If I remember right the crank bearings are the same specs as a SB chevy. Outside block looks stock, but inside its heavily clearanced and reworked. We sold that and the other motor (same thing but with a Dart head) last year.

btw.. that motor is at least 15 yrs old. The builder died years ago and there were no parts. It was his version of a 'cheaper' midget motor. It was a real dog. Even VW's beat us when they were still running.. and the new Dodges have no trouble lapping that thing iwithin a few laps. So now we run Fontana's in a Eagle chassis

I bet a slightly detuned vesion of one of those would run great on E85! (105 octane)

can't we all just get along ?? j body unite man .... nice thread pj ... i have a 2.2 ohv too and i am a 15.89 second car in the 1/4 mile .. i'll post my slips soon ...but 2200 have there potential like every other engine . it comes down to the driver and how much he wants to spend ... if its a passion it should matter how much it cost .. as long as it makes u happy .

hey everyone i have had the quad 4 the ld9 and the 2.2 and the 2200 the quad blew gaskets the ld9 put a rod thru the pan the same day i bought it 78000 mi the 2200 is slow and the 2.2 was running as of last week 168000 mi 16.2 in 1/4mi i loved them all but what i am gettin at is that the 2.2 will probably take a little more abussive treatment but i think i burnt a valve in the 2.2 last sunday o compression in the 3 cyclinder 180 in the others
missing like hell could this of happened because i was not using a cat

That motors top end does look like the Pontiac SD though. With the 2 piece VC and the exhaust port and bolt pattern, he may have very well designed it after the SD head though. The SD head definitely wouldn't fit the block though.

Katech built the motors we ran on the Dash cars that we ran. They also used the SBC rods and bearings on a Callies Crank. Towards the end of the 4cyl. era the wern't the most powerful, but they were the most reliable. They were powerful enough to pull off a few wins than anyone else though, over Dodge, Ford and Toyota. They also had most motors running, in the Pontiacs and Chevys.
