32k on a 2002 2200.
I have a feeling when my car hits 36k, the engine will go out.
96 2.2 3spd w/96k...no engine/trans repairs yet except the gasket on the driver's side of the head started leaking coolant, $3 and 1/2hr to fix. But I run a 180 thermostat, an oil cooler and a trans cooler along with aftermarket gauges. It's all about preventative maintenence...a cooler thermostat and keeping an eye on the coolant will most likely prevent the head/gasket from going.
I have an 97 2.2 its got 165,000 miles on it right now. i had to replace th tranny around 159,000 so i would say thats as good a guess as any in life span. as for the engine ive replaced injecter seals, coolant tank, a cracked radiator, power steering high pressure line, front right axle, lower engine mount, and im replacing the cat on tuesday wich is currently choking the life from my engine.
yeh... its a 3 speed
LeslieCustom, a quick tip before replacing the cat, make sure your O-2 sensor is good and fuel injectors are flowing properly. If one of the injectors isn't working properly the computer, which has one O-2 sensor for all four cylinders, will try to correct the oxygen level by adjusting the fuel flow to the other injectors. This could cause the cat to clog up again. With that many miles you also need to make sure the rings and vale stem seals are good also, or the cat could get clogged by the oil fouling.
BTW I've got the '96 2.2L w/ 176k and the rings and cylinders we in really good shape, only about 0.001" wear in each cylinder! Cant say about the valve stem seals, I didn't see the before the head was torn down.
Yeah... I've got the 3 speed also!
i had a 1990 cavi with 245,000 when i sold it, and the tranny was just starting to slip alittle.
Thats a hell of alot of miles on a vehicle.

2001 Sunfire w/ 96,000 miles
Greetings from Venezuela:
I have a 98 MY 2.2Lt. 4 door Cavalier, Automatic Transmission, assembled by GM de Venezuela. The car has 195,000 kms (aprox 121,000 miles). I drive 140 kms (88 miles) round trip to to work, at some places I can go 115 to 125 kph (72 to 78 mph) downhill.
So far I have had to change the water pump, the alternator voltage regulator and diodes , spark plugs (two times), spark plug cables, serpentine belt (two times, one lasted 140000 km - 87500 miles). It has an oil leak at the Valve Cover, and at the base of the Oil dipstick tube. Timing chain is original.
It is reliable, although today the engine started to rough idle and died when I arrived home (Thats the reason I started to look at Cavalier forums for answers and arrived here !!!) It looks like a bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter.
Any ideas on when to change the Automatic Transmission Oil ?
Off Topic: I had an 83 A Car (Chevy Calebrity) which lasted 525,000 Kms (328,000 Miles) with engine rebuilts at 220,000 and 513,000 kms (137,500 and 320,000 miles). it was not very reliable, Alternator was very bad, Power Steering rack and pinion asm. was changed two times, also A/C compressor was changed three times, etc.
The Cavalier is a much more reliable car, although the A car has a much better ride. Road noise with the Cavalier is terrible.
Damn, sounds like you haven't had any luck at all...
Mine is 2002 I have 23,588 miles and counting and its an ECO..

1998 2200 with 99xxx miles on it. last 10,000 miles have been turboed.
Rebuilt Tranny cuz slave master cylinder died and killed my clutch/flywheel, New Clutch/Pressureplate/flywheel, new slave cylinder, new master clutch cylinder, replaced oil pan cuz it was messed up by an oil change place, replaced waterpump cuz it was starting to weep and was nervous, replaced power steering pump cuz it was getting harder to turn and it started to squeel, new alternator (yesterday) cuz it died due to an oil leak that covered it, cracked valve cover due to exhaust leak heating it up from wastegate and cracking it, new head gasket. MOST replacements were done at around 75,000 miles
compression is a setady 180 through all 4 cylinders
A/F ratio is 11.9 when under boost at about 7psi.
